Vehicle Detail

The T20SL was a direct development of the American market scrambler version of the T20S. Lights were added, hence the model type T20SL. There were two basic types: Road Version – Downswept exhaust pipe and silencer, ‘Bonneville’ style handlebar, road tyres, small triangular toolbox, either a ‘D’ shaped speedo or a round speedo and tachometer, lights with a quickly detachable headlamp(should the bike be required for competition use). Scrambler Version - Upswept exhaust pipe with either a silencer or an extension pipe an upswept handlebar, off road tyres, no toolbox or lights. Both versions had the 9:1piston, ‘R’ cam, close ratio gears, Energy Transfer ignition system, Monobloc carburettor 376/272 which had a 15/16” choke size, large inlet valve and sports type valve springs, internally sprung heavyweight front forks, the narrow ‘Teardrop’ shaped petrol tank, ball ended handlebar levers and a crankcase shield. The machine was intended as a performance bike and this was shown to be the case in a road test conducted by ‘Motor Cycling’ magazine on the 27th April 1961. They found the following figures: Top speed (timed) - 77.8mph Fuel consumption- 114mpg @ 30mph, 84mpg @ 50mph, overall 91.4mpg. Braking- 31.5 feet from 30mph on dry asphalt. Acceleration- 62mph at the end of a standing quarter mile. The T20SL was only made for the 1961 season, the first machine was 64592, this machine was in fact a number from the previous 1960 season but the machine did not leave the factory until November 1960 which was well into the 1961 year. The last T20SL was 81889 which was also the last number for 1961 and that machine was sent to Eire in September 1961. There were a total of 1813 T20SLs made. (This information is courtesy of Mike Estall) Recommended reading is Mike Estalls excellent book. The Triumph Tiger Cub Bible. I bought this Cub new in 1961 original owner and always stored it inside mostly in my den. This Competition Cub was made only one year 1961 and Vin # is T30101. Since I had a large collection of motorcycles many British I didn't drive it often and the mileage remains at 1569 original miles and I will include a notarized cetified affadavit of mileage with the sale. Everything is original on this Cub even the Triumph grips bieng original and in perfect shape shows how well I took care of this machine . The handlebars also original and with the exception of a hose clamp on the carb filter outlet nothing has been changed noting taken apart , the best corect oil was was used and changed frequently. I became a Penrite oil dealer when I sold motorcycles as the British made Penrite oil was a well known oil for British Motorcycles amd this sale will include some new sealed cases of this oil. This Cub is in perfect condition and un restored. I am an enthusiast and former multi-line Motorcycle dealer for decades starting in 1972 for Honda ,Yamaha,Suzuki and some others and it's been maintained to the highest degree sparing no expense. The engine has never been apart and the piston is standard original and I will include a NOS, New old stock standard extra Piston kit with the sale for the future use with some other NOS original spares . It has never been dropped and and it does run perfectly although I would still clean the Carb and even though the oil is new I would change it again add gas and go. This Cub requires no battery as it is a Energy Transfer ignition on this competition model of Cub. Shipping is not included but I have shipped many expensive bikes of mine and will assist in getting it loaded , packed well to protect it in shipment and being there on call for the shipper. You can come to my home and pick up or view as well. I have sold a lot of my motorcycles the last few years and many were British including a 1959 DBD BSA Goldstar, a consecutive set of two VELO Thruxtons, some Nortons BSAs and Triumphs and many other european and american motorcycles. I bought this Triumph Cub new so I know the complete history of it. This is not a distressed sale nor a give away as I do not have to sell it but I will sell it for a fair price. This Cub Model was made only for the year 1961 and will only appreciate in value. I have lowered the reserve Email with any questions. I will give my phone # to discuss to interested buyers only!
