Vehicle Detail
The time has come for us to part with our VW-TDI; our loss, your gain. We bought it in 2005 while living in Seattle, WA. We drove into the mountains quite often to snowshoe/camp and needed a car that could carry 5 people & all their gear & a 100lb dog, get great mileage, and was fun to drive. The VW met all these criteria. Since then we have moved to PA and drive far less. My commute has shortened from 30 miles a day to 8 and my wife walks to work and drops our son at daycare on the way. The diesel is a fantastic engine but it’s barely warmed up by the time I get to work. So we’re looking at getting an electric/hybrid to more appropriately meet the needs of our new lifestyle. What it is: - 1996 B4 Passat Station Wagon TDI. Wolfsburg Edition, Dark Green with Tan Interior, Sunroof, 5-Speed Manual, Power Windows/Door/Locks. - 166K miles (2 owners, we’ve had it since 90K) - Clean Title - Full Synthetic Oil since we got it - 40 mpg around town, 47mpg highway - 18 gal fuel tank (~700 mile range) - Dual front airbags All major repairs were done at either a dealership, Stuttgart Motorhaus (Tucson, AZ) or L&T Enterprises (Allentown, PA) Recent Work - Starter Motor (Bosch) (’12) - Fuel Filter (’12) - Timing Belt (’11) - Serpentine Belt and Tensioner (’10) - Turbo (’10) - Rear Pads and Rotors (’10) - Tires (’09) - Front Pads and Rotors (’09) - A/C Compressor (’09) - Glow-plugs (‘08) - Rear Struts and Linkage (’08) - Injection Pump (’07) - Clutch Slave Cylinder (‘07) Things You Want to Know: This is a 16 year old car. It has been well taken care of but it is old enough to get a license. VW diesels are legendary and if well maintained this car will go 300K miles. It is quick and will happily drive 75 mph on the highway all day. The interior is not perfect but has been kept pretty clean. There is an intermittent leak on the rear passenger side of the car. Maybe sunroof weep hole? It used to happen more often but hasn’t reappeared in a couple of months, I’m not sure why. Carpet on that side gets damp when it does happen. Windows and door locks all work currently. They are notoriously problematic on these cars and this one is no exception. But currently they all work. Aftermarket CD/Tuner/iPod head unit with iPod jack. You can navigate the iPod from the head unit, but it does not charge the newer iPods. I have a guy in the area that has a parts car (same year, body and color but VR6 instead of TDI). If you need random parts he’s very reasonable. Heat blows warm, not hot. Glow-plugs are in good shape. Comes with a VAG-COM to read engine codes. I have solid service records for the last 5 years and sporadic from before that. In AZ we ran it on 50% Bio-Diesel and it ran beautifully. The clear coat on the hood is coming off in a few patches. Body is in good shape. No major dents or rust. This is a rare car. VW only sold about 1000 of these in the US and there are probably less than 500 still on the road. The rear cargo space is gigantic. The B4 Passat platform is one of their largest ever and can fit twice as much stuff as most modern wagons as well as four large adults comfortably.
