Thanks! * * * This auction is for a lovingly preserved 1982 VW Vanagon Westfalia Turbo Diesel. I dont quite know where to start with this awesome van. I bought it a couple of months ago from a local older man who was needing extra money to put a down payment on a house. He made it clear that if it werent for that, he would not have ever sold it. He literally was fighting tears when I picked it up from him. He bought the van in 2009 from a family that had just moved to Austin from Boulder, Colorado. As soon as he got it, he decided it was time for a full mechanical restoration of the van since everything was original. Luckily, he was the man for the job since he was a VW technician in Mexico City for many years before coming to the U.S. in 2008. The original engine was tired so he sourced another 1.6 Turbo Diesel from a VW Quantum Sedan. The engine was sent to a machine shop which completely rebuilt the internals and cylinder head. A brand new turbocharger was also added. Youll find a couple pictures at the very bottom of this listing which he proudly took of the engine back in 2010 after he got it back and before he installed it. The engine runs excellent and does not leak. During this time he also replaced all of the belts, hoses, heater lines, water lines, etc. to complete the full mechanical restoration. Everything on this van works perfectly. The only items I have not tested are the natural gas operated appliances such as the stove. I did test the refrigerator and it seems to be working great. The original tiny ice trays are still in their original shrink wrapping inside the fridge. It is my understanding that this van did not originally come with Air Conditioning. However, with the previous owner being a VW tech, he was able to source every factory piece needed to convert it to have A/C and Im happy to say it works great, and you would never know it didnt come with it originally. I just took the Westfalia to a local VW specialist to have it thoroughly checked out. They replaced the valve cover gasket which was barely seeping a little oil, all the engine belts since they were just starting to dry crack, and both the brake master cylinder and brake booster. The van stops on a dime now. I also had a 4-wheel alignment done and had the tires rotated and computer balanced. If you desire to fly in and drive it home, its ready for the road. Now lets talk about the exterior of the van. This van is wearing 90% of its original paint. The front end was repainted because of a dent below the windshield, and the rear hatch was repainted from being bumped at a stop light, and the workmanship was excellent in both cases. Beyond those two panels, all paint is factory original. There is not rust whatsoever anywhere on this van, nor has there ever been any rust anywhere on this van. I inspected the underside thoroughly while it was on the lift being serviced and as you can tell from the pictures it is completely solid. The ugly brown stuff you see on the underside of the van is not surface rust. That is a cosmoline rust inhibitor which youll also find traces of in the door jambs. NO RUST whatsoever. There are a few tiny paint nicks and door dings, but you have to look hard to find them. Some of the window seals are slightly dry, but theyre all in great shape. All glass is original except for the windshield which is a high quality PPG replacement. All the lights, turn signals, etc work great. You wont find any electrical gremlins. When the previous owner installed the A/C, he also completely disassembled the dash and interior panels in order to retrace and refresh all factory wiring. The original 14 inch alloy wheels are in great shape and the tires are 2 years old and have about 70% tread. The fiberglass Westfalia pop-top is in excellent condition with no damage. The seals are also in excellent condition. The roof canvas is all original and in remarkably good condition. Ready to go camping? Alright now the interior. Once again, everything inside the van is original and in great shape. The one known exception to the originality is the front seats, but your back will thank you for that. These seats were sourced from a later model Vanagon and are mounted to the original seat tracks. The passenger seat swivels 180 degrees to the rear. There arent any cracks in the dash. The carpet is original and in excellent shape. The original white contact paper which lines most of the interior roof and side panels is showing signs of age and should probably be replaced at some point. The worst spot is around the drivers sunvisor. All the dash lights work great. All the gauges work great. Windshield wipers, fog lamps, etc all work as they should. The rear seat folds down into a bed, and there is also a bed up in the pop-top area for when the roof is raised which means there is sleeping space for four. All of the interior upholstery, including the rear seat and upstairs bed, is all original and in great shape. As far as I can tell, this van has never been smoked in at all. There are no foul odors and everything is very clean everywhere you look. I cannot stress enough the incredible originality and cleanliness of this Vanagon after over 30 years of careful use. The buyer will be extremely pleased. The mileage is very low at 127k and is verified by Carfax as being accurate. This van is Carfax Certified. I do have the clean and clear title in hand and ready to sign over to the buyer. All original books and manuals are present for everything from the van itself to the stove and refrigerator. I also have a Service Manual for the van. There are also extra curtains and netting for when the van is in full camping mode.
