Vehicle Detail

MILAGE 034,590 You are bidding on a good running and working 1973 American La France fire truck. The smooth running 6 cylinder GMC diesel engine sounds great. It is coupled with a strong Allison automatic truck transmission. A few years ago as I was scanning e-bay, I came across this fire engine. I asked my wife, “Don’t you think our grandkids need a fire truck?” Grandma didn’t say, “no”, so I started bidding on this truck. Eventually I won the bid. The truck was located in Indiana and we live in Oklahoma. Grandma and grandpa purchased airplane tickets to Indiana so we could drive the fire truck back to Oklahoma. My cousin picked us up at the airport and we stayed a couple days with him and his wife. Then he drove us to the town where the fire engine was (about 125 miles from their house). The plan was to drive truck back to my cousin’s house and then the next day start home with the truck. They delivered us to fire truck, we finished the transaction and started driving the fire truck. The rough ride of the truck proved to be more than grandma bargained for! Instantly, we decided to purchase a return airline ticket so grandma could fly home instead of ridding in fire truck. After traveling about 10 miles, we saw my cousin’s car, flagged him down and grandma pleaded to ride the rest of the way to his house in the car. The trip from Indiana to Oklahoma was indeed, a very bumpy ride, but the truck made it in fine order. Only trouble encountered was fan belts being replaced about half way home. We live in the country so all of our grandchildren have been able to drive and play on the truck. The kids really enjoy the working lights, sirens and especially the loud air horn. The tank holds water and the water pump works to pump water through any one of the 2” lines or either of the 2 hose reels with ¾” hoses. We have taken the truck to children’s events and it is always a crowd pleaser. Through the years, our grandkids have grown up, the truck has become “old hat” to them and grandma says, “It is time to let someone else enjoy the fire truck.” We have had lots of fun with it. I think it could be driven across the country without any problem. It is almost 40 years old but odometer only shows 034,590 miles. The odometer was working when we purchased it and it is still working so I assume that is actual mileage. Please feel free to ask questions through e-bay or call Melvin at 580-399-5835 with any questions.
