THANKS. 1972 GMC 4X4 JIMMY: CLEAN ORIGINAL SURVIVOR. Go topless in the summer with this convertible GMC jimmy with full removable factory top. This hugger orange jimmy was bought new in Montana and has never left. Only has had two registered owners and three owners total counting me. I bought it from the second owner who bought it from the first owner in 1979. Second owner had it for 33 years. He died a couple years ago and his wife wasn't using it which is why they sold it to me. This was not his daily driver and it was primarily used in the summer for recreating. I'm sure the mileage of 105k is original. It was his toy and the family was very fond of it. The jimmy was bought new in Livingston Montana at the Whiting chevrolet/gmc dealership. I was told that the original owner was the son of the gentleman that owned the dealership. The whiting sticker was still on it but most of it came off when washed. You can still read it though. The jimmy runs excellent and the body is in nice shape for an un-restored original. Here are all the details. MORE PICTURES ARE INCLUDED IN A LINK BELOW. DRIVETRAIN The jimmy has the original 350 V-8 with 3-speed auto transmission. The motor is a four barrel engine and appears all original and stock, with the exception of dual exhaust. The motor runs excellent. It doesn't smoke at all. No ticks or knocks or anything abnormal. No oil in the water or water in the oil. In runs cool and starts up great every time. When warm, starts at the touch of the key without using the throttle. Exhaust sounds great and has glasspacks. This has a manual choke but the cable seems stuck. It isn't really needed though and it's always started even in cool weather. I'm sure this motor is the original, but I have not checked the VIN on it. I did check the suffix code, which is TDR and checks out as a 1972 four barrel 350. If it's really a concern for you, I'll try to find the VIN on the engine. In this year it's either on the back of the engine or by the oil filter. Sometimes they are very difficult to see on the back of the engine, which is why I didn't try. The motor has good power, probably as much as it ever had. The transmission works fine. I'm not sure if it's a turbo 350 or 400, but if it matters I'll check for you. Most likely is a turbo 400. When I bought it, it had a transmission leak. By the time I got around to checking it out, it had stopped leaking. I guess a seal was dry from sitting or something. It doesn't leak at all now and yes, I have topped the fluid off. The second to third shift is a little slow under throttle. Probably nothing to be concerned with, and I've owned several that firmed up with a new filter and fluid. The jimmy drives great down the highway. Gearing is lower and probably 4.11 or 3.73. It's fine and will cruise at 65-70. Gearing is probably not ideal for extended freeway driving but these are easy to put 700r4 overdrives in if that fits the bill better for you. It drives straight and true. Frontend feels tight. Doesn't wander, shimmy, vibrate or anything abnormal. It is very tight and quiet, with the exception of the rear fiberglass door that rattles over bumps. I drove it with the wheels/tires in the pics which are NOT included. The jimmy comes with aluminum turbine wheels and tires that aren't real nice. Wheels are usable though and would probably clean up well. The 4x4 works as it should and has warn hubs. This jimmy has power front disc brakes, power steering, tilt column, and 12-bolt rear. Rear could be a posi. I never jacked it up and did a formal test, but it spun both rear wheels on my shop floor. All gauges work. Speedometer works. Oil pressure is great and stays up even when warm. The gmc is running on a temporary fuel "tank" under the hood now. Original fuel tank didn't seem to want to work. I believe the pickup tube is plugged. It is common when they sit for years to get plugged when the fuel turns to varnish in the pickup tube. I've fixed many before but haven't gotten around to this. I may fix it before the auction is over but it is driveable now on the gallon jug. Parking brake, heater, wipers, lights, turn signals, defrost, horn, lighter, etc. all works. Radio is the original AM unit, but doesn't seem to work. Original jack and handle is included. Build sheet (broadcast sheet?) is still on the glovebox door and is pictured. The horn has a grounding problem because it sometimes honks when the turn signal is used. This is not uncommon in these old rigs and it's an easy fix when you take the wheel off. Overall, you'd be hard pressed to find one that is more mechanically sound unless it has been restored. It really needs nothing to be a daily driver except different tires. The fluids should probably be changed also and I'm sure a lube job wouldn't hurt. VIDEO OF ENGINE RUNNING: http://s942.photobucket.com/albums/ad267/tutheck5/1972%20jimmy/?action=view¤t=281.mp4 OIL GAUGE VIDEO: http://s942.photobucket.com/albums/ad267/tutheck5/1972%20jimmy/?action=view¤t=280.mp4 BODY The body is not perfect, but is in great original condition. The paint is original and there is no sign of any repaint or touchup anywhere. No bondo anywhere. Paint does have the usual wear, scratches, dings, etc. but still shines and looks cool. This does have the usual rocker rust that most of these do have. Drivers side is worse and will definitely need an inner and outer rocker. Passenger side may just need an outer. Previous owner riveted the sill plates on so I couldn't explore it too much. Floors look nice and solid and if they need any work, it will be minor only close to the sill plate. This has some sort of factory skid plates underneath so I couldn't see the floors from that vantage either, but I inspected them well from above and poked around well and they appear nice and solid. Previous owner tried to fix the rockers but didn't do it right and you'll need to start over. Also has a little rust behind the door close to the rocker. This area can be repaired with raw sheetmetal patches, although patch panels may be available. The only other rust is in the rear floor, under the rear chrome carpet strip. You can't really see it in the pics, but it will need a little repairing. The bottom of the tailgate, tailgate jam, doors, doorjams, frame, quarters, wheelhouses, hood, fenders, cowl, firewall, dash, header, etc. etc. are nice. Bumpers are usable. Fiberglass top has dents in the very top that should pop out, but I haven't messed with it. Rear fiberglass door is damaged but still latches. Previous owner said the top has never been off of it. Tailgate works as it should. Doors lock. Hood works as it should. Windshield is cracked but usable. Other windows are good but have the usual blems you'd expect. Mirrors are not original. Overall the body does need a little work, but it looks great now. You could just fix the rocker rust and paint to match and drive it, or you have a great body for an easy restoration. INTERIOR The interior is mostly original and is in good shape. Front seats have been recovered and receipt is included. Rear seat is original also but hasn't been recovered and is ripped. Rear side panels have been recovered and are showing wear. Floor mat is original and has lots of wear/cracks you'd expect. Dash, steering wheel, door panels, dashpad, and gauges are in nice shape. Dash pad does have a couple cracks. OVERALL I love this jimmy. Most of these have been mudded or thrashed on and it's rare to see one this original and unmolested (especially orange). I'd like to keep it and give it to my son, which would be a good excuse for me to be able to drive it occasionally. I'm probably going to get him something with airbags and antilock brakes so the jimmy has to go.
