Vehicle Detail

This rare “Wide Body” 1931 Soft Top Pickup ( nowadays called a “Roadster Pick Up” ) was the dream of the owner who was enamored with Model A Fords. He has owned over a dozen Model A’s and is quite knowledgeable about them. He is now 78 years old and nearly totally blind as well as wearing 2 hearing aids. He finally reluctantly realizes he has to accept that father time is overtaking him and he must sell this nearly completed vehicle which had a body off restoration. It has been painstakingly authentically restored with help from Model A knowledgeable friends on various portions of the project. The truck is basically all original with the exception of having two chromed parking lights which were found on DeLuxe 1931 Model A cars, two tail lights, an excellent glistening stainless radiator shell instead of the black steel shell normally found on the truck models and dual side mounted white wall tires. The truck body and bed have not been altered, but these DeLuxe Model A enhancements greatly add to the appearance and appeal of this rare body style. Yet to be replaced are the Seat, the Top and frame and the Windshield frame. The rare Wide Body box which became an available option in 1931 is original and was restored at considerable expense. It has a varnished wooden floor with stainless separators between the wooden strips. With the owners’s limitations, his wife who is two years younger must drive the car to outings with him as the passenger of course. The vehicle has been carefully restored over the last 5 years using mostly NOS or rebuilt components The motor was professionally completely rebuilt and the beautiful eye catching color is base coat / clear coat which was also done professionally. A close inspection will disclose that the paint work was well and carefully done. I am a friend who has written up this description in consultation with the owner though a personal friend of mine has put this ad on eBay which is beyond my capabilities. The owner and I used to live only a few miles apart in south Florida where I was a Charter Member of the Gold Coast Region of MARC which we formed in 1966. Now, however we live about 100 miles apart and though I have periodically watched the progression of the restoration, I rarely get to see my friend or the truck, though I did see it within the last month. The owner is not just legally blind, but now almost completely blind, Even though almost blind, he insisted on backing it out of his garage himself with my directions when I last saw him. The car starts right up and runs very nicely. These pictures were taken recently by his son or the owner’s wife who is only 2 years younger than he is. The owner is visable in two of the pictures. Though the seat, the top and the windshield frame have not yet been replaced, the truck is quite presentable and the owner and his wife take it to cruise ins and shows where its rare body style and sharp appearance and condition attract a lot of attention. It has the hard to find original narrow rear fenders which came only with the wide body, it has original welled front fenders ( not reproductions), NOS or rebuilt starter and bendix, shocks, fuel gauge apparatus, and the radiator was recored. All 6 wheels were sandblasted, primed and painted and the 4 tires on the ground are very good with new tubes. All the door handles inside and out are new and both splash aprons are new. The vehicle is still 6 volt positive ground, but the generator has been replaced with an alternator which assures that the battery is always fully charged, though there is a body mounted master cut off switch reachable on the riser below the front of the seat. The distributor is all stock, but has the modern points with the condenser inside the distributor cap to retain the original appearance. The interior paneling is all new as is all of the wiring and the battery which is where it belongs under the floor. It has the correct horn, new steering wheel and dash panel and many other parts, some of which can be seen in the pictures. From the foregoing, it is obvious that he did not intend to ever sell it and he still has misgivings about parting with it. The three items which though usable should probably be replaced are all readily obtainable. The Seat is comfortable, but is not correct, the top and frame should probably be attended to as it is not new and crisp as is the rest of the vehicle, but complete replacements units are readily available and the windshield frame should be replaced. Just the same, the Truck is usable as is and is ready to travel. The owner and his wife take it to events regularly as it runs well and does attract a lot of attention. The vehicle is very nicely restored as described and shown in the pictures. However, any prospective purchaser is invited to personally inspect it to verify its condition by pre-arranged appointment. The vehicle is being sold “as is” with a non-refundable $2000 deposit to be paid by the winning bidder via Pay Pal within 48 hours of either the end of the auction or if purchased at the Buy it Now price. Be advised that eBay removes the Buy it Now option for the rest of the auction once the seller’s reserve price has been met. The balance of the selling price is to be paid within 10 days by Bank Wire Transfer using the account information provided to the Buyer following the sale. The vehicle may remain with the owner for 30 days and possibly somewhat longer by written agreement of both parties, but it may not leave the owner’s property until all funds have cleared. Despite the owner being almost blind, he is very active and involved with the National Federation of the Blind and his wife is still working, so any appointment needs to be by pre-arrangement. He lives in Melbourne, Florida, about 30 miles from the Shuttle Launch site at Cape Canaveral. This vehical is located in Melbourne, Florida.
