Vehicle Detail
For sale is my rare and beautiful 1987 Mercedes-Benz Turbo Diesel Wagon. I am the third owner of the vehicle. The original owner traded the vehicle back to the dealer he bought it from in Lexington, Kentucky with 37K miles on it. It was purchased by a gentleman in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He bought the car with 39K on it and he drove his 1985 Mercedes in the winter and drove the 1987 in the summer. I was getting into biodiesel back in 2006 and I looked at a multitude of cars that were offered on Ebay for 9 months when this vehicle came up in the fall of 2006. The car was pristine and the best 1987 that I could find. I paid almost $17,000.00 when I purchased it off of Ebay. The car originally sold for $41,000 back in 1987 (I still have the original sticker somewhere to prove it). It had about 79K miles on it when I purchased it in 2006. Many who own these cars will not tell you that there was a factory recall on it that had to do with a thing called a trap oxidizer. These things were lethal to these engines if not taken back and removed. I immediately did the recall at a local DC dealer, but unfortunately the damage had been done and neither previous owner fixed this and my engine blew up on the GW bridge in New York in the middle of my summer vacation with all kids and wife in 2007. However, a technician at the Mercedes dealership in NJ turned me onto the famous Udo of Udo's garage in Tenafly, NJ. Udo's family used to own the Mercedes dealership in NJ and he is an amazing Mercedes (and all foreign cars) mechanic. It took Udo 6 months to rebuild my engine between fixing his Ferrari's Lamborghinis, other Mercedes, and BMW's but he finally got it done, and I walked away with a virtually new engine with about 110,000 miles. Since then I have replaced virtually every part in the engine. New radiator, new starter, new alternator, new battery, new fuel lines, new injectors, you name it. I have replaced the windshield, replaced the headlights and fog lights, the struts (shocks), the cruise control, the ventilation system, etc. I have had the vehicle hood repainted, I have had the gold racing stripe re-painted, I have replaced numerous tires (the ones on the vehicle are only a few months old). In addition, I a few year's ago I put in a new Alpine CD player with a hookup in the glove box for an I-phone/I-pod (I play my playlists on my Iphone 4S with no problems). The car is in excellent shape. I have kept the rugs and mats cleaned religiously and I am not a smoker so the car to my knowledge has never been smoked in so it still has that Mercedes faux leather smell. The cruise control works great, the windows and sunroof work fine, the air conditioner works great, etc. The odometer and the mileage meters are not working in the dash. They stopped about a year ago right when the car was clicking over to 200K. Since then I have driven the vehicle around 4 to 5K per month commuting 2 times a week from Fredericksburg, VA to Chesapeake, VA (2 1/2 hour drive) for the past year since it stopped so I would estimate that there is an additional 50 to 60K in mileage on the vehicle which would put it somewhere at 250 to 260K in mileage. However, when you consider that the engine was re-built at 110K, you only have about 140 to 150K on the re-built engine. If you want a primo car, you will probably have to put in an additional $1 to $3K to do the following: 1) replace the transmission seals (the car rides fine and you can put a lot of transmission fluid in the car for $2K), 2) get the odometer and the mileage trip clicker to work (speedo works fine as do all of the other gauges), 3) fix the rear wiper (rear defrost works fine), and have someone tune it up. The transmission works fine and shifts fine but the car needs new transmission seals because it does leak a bit of transmission fluid. The mercedes dealer told me it would cost 2K to fix because they would have to pull the transmission off the car to replace the seals. If you can work on a car and you can do the labor you will save a lot of money. If not you should be prepared to spend this money (if you're going to the Mercedes dealer). The car engine does use oil but if you change the oil every 4 or 5K you will never have to add a quart. It is not significant but it does use oil. The dash has no cracks on it and looks great. There is one 2 inch crack of the seat material in the drivers seat and that's it. The console wood veneer is hanging tough but is beginning to crack. Hey, it's a 25 year old vehicle. The 3rd seat in the back will allow you to put a couple extra small kids in the vehicle if they don't mind looking at cars behind the vehicle the entire trip. I have the bars for the roof rack that alllow you to put on travel carriers and I will even give you a Thule roof carrier that I bought for it if you buy the vehicle at no extra charge. It's sitting in the basement and has not been used since the fatefull NY trip. You are not going to beat most cars off the line with this vehicle even with the turbocharger, but when you get out on the open road and you have the cruise control going and the radio playing it is quiet, and you do not feel the vibrations in the road because the car is quite heavy. The car has been getting 26 to 27MPG consistently as long as I have owned it. I have taken this car to Maine in the summer, moved to Dallas for a few months and have driven it to Dallas and back, and commuted to Tidewater, VA for 3 years and it is still a joy to ride. I have probably spent the equivalent of what the original ower paid for it in replacement parts and maintenance in the past 6 years. It is a great car and I would love to keep it but I have to pay a few bills and I just picked up a new volkswagen Tiquan off of a lease for a great price. So my loss is your gain. So all of you soccer mom's in Northern Virginia, here is your chance to own a cheap Mercedes-Benz that will function as your Chrysler mini-van. For restorers, you can buy this car with my low reserve, put a few thousand in it and still sell it for 10 to 12K (yeah I watch those shows). And if noone buys it, then great. I'll keep it and be very happy (although my wife will not be happy). You will be responsible for picking the vehicle up at my home in the Fredericksburg, VA area. I will require a $500.00 deposit within 2 days of the auction, and the balance within a week after the auction. If you want to contact me about the vehicle you are welcome to do so via email at stepahindad@aol.com. Good luck bidding.
