Vehicle Detail
. 1954 MG TF Chassis# HDC46/1695 ; Engine# XPEG/TF/30444 Fresh Restoration – No Expense Spared! An exceptional three-owner machine with a blank-check restoration done to a high standard. All work performed by a long-established specialist. Sensible upgrades include a Mazda 5-speed transmission and modern radial tires, which make this car easier, safer and even more enjoyable to drive. IT HAS DONE FEWER THAN 100 MILES SINCE BEING COMPLETED. A walk around the car is A FEAST FOR THE EYES: Everything is fresh looking. The all-new and flawless chrome is stunningly offset against the fine black finish. All the trim is new, from the canvas top to the unmarked bumpers. The wire wheels (an essential factory option on any TF!) are straight-and-true, and have new unmarked knock-off spinners with correct MG logos. The owner went a step further by opting for a chromed finish, and these sparkling wheels really complete the glamorous, elegant presence of this lovely car. The INTERIOR IS 100% NEW, with excellent fit and finish on all upholstery and carpets. The behind-the-seats storage box has clean, new liners (in fact, the whole box is newly crafted from timber). It contains a new, unused wheel hammer, plus a wooden cushion form to prevent damage to the ears on the spinners. The dash is clean and pristine, with gauges that all work (even the clock!). The view through the new windshield, down the tapering bonnet, completes the FEELING OF SITTING IN A BRAND NEW '54 MG. A concourse judge’s dream awaits UNDER THE BONNET: VIRTUALLY SPOTLESS AND COMPLETELY IN ORDER. Rebuilt from the crank up, the original matching-number engine still looks as it did upon installation, with no leaks or streaks to sully the red head or block. Even the valve cover gasket is dry and clean. The immaculate under-bonnet toolbox contains a canvas tool bag with genuine King Dick spanners & sockets (direct from Abingdon, England!), and BMC jack...All new, unused, and still in plastic bags. To complete the final “engine room” detail, there is a brand new original-style Lucas “tar-top” battery fitted (not shown in the photos). On a hoist, one can appreciate the CHASSIS DETAILING : The work done underneath is almost as pretty as what’s on top. Even a quick look will show the new wooden floors, new suspension, bushings, grommets, and a complete original-style exhaust that still has its stickers attached. This TF starts easily with a pull of the starter switch, in concert with a touch of throttle and choke. After warming, it settles into a smooth, soothing idle and has crisp throttle response. It revs smoothly and still has the tightness of a new factory unit. Properly broken-in by the next owner, it should provide many years of carefree miles and smiles. ON THE ROAD, it’s eager to sprint. The clutch is sharp and the 5-speed transmission has slick, smooth synchromesh on each gear, but the gearbox’s real ace is the relaxed cruising at highway speeds due to the extra ratio. This modification, along with the modern radials (165/80R 15), make the car SO usable and pleasant that they should be considered “de rigueur” on any TF for all but the most ardent purists. As it should be, the steering is light, quick and direct and the suspension is tight but forgiving. The ride, handling, and solidity are a revelation, and this is a VIVID EXAMPLE OF THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PARTIAL “REHAB” AND A BODY-OFF, NUT-AND-BOLT COMPLETE RESTORATION: LIKE NIGHT AND DAY. The experience is like driving a “new old car”. Any flaws are few and slight. There are two parallel light scratches in the finish on the bonnet, about 5” long, which were difficult to photograph, and there are very minor imperfections in the finish in out-of-the-way places that need to be searched out to be discovered...Things that would rankle at Pebble Beach, but not at your MGCA concours. Also, there are no side curtains (the owner would NEVER drive this car in bad weather!). Can’t think of anything else. Please look carefully at all twenty-four photos: They do not mislead or mask in any way (if anything, they do not do the car justice). We have many more photos of this car. Please leave us your email address and we’ll be happy to send you the complete album! Also, you can SEE AND HEAR IT RUN on You Tube: Search MM1000 MG TD XPAG SOME EXTRA PERSPECTIVE ON THE TF: The classic MG 1250cc “XPAG” engine powered the TB, TC, TD and TF models, in successively uprated states of tune. Fitted to the TF in its most developed “Group III” state, it remained a smooth, tractable motor. It was durable enough to withstand several stages of aftermarket “hotrod tuning” while remaining reliable (even when supercharged). Over 180,000 were built, powering everything from generators and airplane starters, to the T-Series sports cars, to MG race cars and Bonneville record breakers. THE TRUSTY LITTLE XPAG IS TRULY A CLASSIC IN ITS OWN RIGHT. With the TF, MG refined its traditional styling and design philosophy to its ultimate potential. The TF’s detailing is superb. The slight slope to the bonnet compliments its taper. The leaned-back, lower-profile grille and faired-in headlamps were careful nods to modernity, artfully integrated and suggestive of speed and slipstreaming. The octagonal gauges are another example of a complete design ethos that permeates the TF like no earlier model. It’s also the most comfortable of the “vintage” MGs, with the best driving characteristics. THE TF REMAINS FOR ALL TIME THE PINNACLE OF DEVELOPMENT OF CECIL KIMBER’S VISION OF WHAT A MORRIS GARAGES SPORTS CAR SHOULD BE. Appreciation of all this history was the driving force for the owner of this car to pursue perfection in restoring this exceptional TF.
