2001 BMW 540i 6-speed MANUAL transmission M-Sport Package I have owned this car for nearly three years and put about 30,000 miles on it. This car has been wonderful to me. Upon purchase I had the car serviced at a local Baltimore BMW dealer to replace several seals and perform an overall check of the vehicle, and get a safety inspection. Since then I have put new four tires on it, new brakes (rotors and pads), new battery, new air filters, new tie rods or control arms (dont recall exactly which parts), had an alignment done, and changed the oil several times. I have not had any reliability issues and this car has been my daily driver. The car's radio was initially draining the battery, and I was able to locate the fuse that would prevent the power drain. I installed a switch and since I have never had any issues. When I purchased the car it also had existing body damage on the right side from scraping a guardrail, as you will see in the CarFax report. (I originally intended to get this fixed with new door skins (you can find them on eBay or at a junkyard for about $150 each.) During my ownership, a neighbor also backed into the drivers door leaving a sizeable dent. There is also a dent near the drivers side tail light. No other accidents to my knowledge and I believe everything in the car is original. Things you might like about this car: '01 Redesign for model year 2001 the 5-series was redesigned, the most notable of which are updated headlights (with angel eyes) and updated LED tail lights. Engine 282 hp / 324 ft-lb torque bulletproof 4.4 liter V8 this car is fast and pulls strong hard at all RPMs; even with 226k miles. This car is fast. Reported 0-60 times are in the mid 5 second range with manual transmission. Engine is strong. 6-speed manual transmission clutch shifts fine in all gears with no issues; engages smoothly; lots of life left on clutch; low RPMs at highway speed = good gas mileage. DSP Sound factory upgraded digital sound processing sound system iPod integration kit Dension Ice Link Plus kit allows you to plug in your iPod in at the center console connector (could relocate if you wish) and your iPod will play through factory radio without any loss of sound, all steering controls work, factory radio controls work, and you see the song name and artist scroll across the dashboard. Also, charges your iPod automatically and iPod goes to sleep when you turn the car off. Cold weather package 3-stage heated driver and passenger seats, etc. Sport package Sport seats, sport steering wheel, sport staggered wheels (rear are wider), lower factory sport suspension, etc. Tires tires are all matching Kumho Ecsta tires with lots of life left. Full size OEM spare with good tire in trunk Air Conditioning ice cold Headlights factory HID and angel eyes. I recently had these polished. Options/Standard features factory xenon HID lights, angel eyes, sunroof, leather, dynamic stability control, etc. Driving experience many people will tell you the driving experience in this body style (e39) is preferable to the later (e60) body style. I dont disagree. I love how this car drives and handles. It is smooth and quiet on the highway and begs to be pushed. Reliability this car has never left me stranded. It starts right up every time and was my daily driver. I would be comfortable driving this car anywhere. Miscellaneous no rock chips in windshield, brakes are good (but sometimes squeal, but have lots of life left), alignment is straight, sunroof works, etc. Low fuel costs I have always used 87 octane gasoline with no problems whatsoever (as I did in my previous car, a 2001 525i as well). You dont need to waste your money on premium gas with this car. BMW the ultimate driving machine. If this will be your first BMW, you may never go back. Having driven several other makes, there is nothing like a BMW. Check Control OK cars onboard monitoring system shows everything is ok and there are no issues Things you might not like about this car Passenger window inoperable. All other windows work great. My intention was when putting on a new door it would have a working window motor, which I never got to replacing. I sealed the window shut with black silicon, which you could remove. Small oil leak maybe a couple drops a day no cause for concern and no need to add oil between oil changes but wanted to fully disclose. Also, car burns a little oil as is typical with BMWs Drivers seat split in the seam down the middle. Airbag light has always been on since Ive owned the car and I have not attempted to diagnose the cause. I do not believe any airbags have been ever deployed, however. Radio pixels somewhat difficult to read but still readable, common problem in these cars, see picture Black interior Interior was originally beige, but I dyed it black with Duplicolor leather paint; see from the pictures its in great shape (except for drivers seat seam) Body damage Passenger side has scraping all along the side. Drivers door has a large dent. Driver rear quarter panel has a dent as well. Rattles this car does have high miles and is about 11 years old. It is not perfect. It does have a few rattles Radio switch as mentioned above, radio does seem to fully shut-off when the ignition is turned off. I installed a switch at the center armrest that I switch to off every time I turn the car off. This is 100% fixed the electrical drain. Sun visor drivers sun visor is missing. You can buy an OEM replacement for about $40 on eBay, but I just use sunglasses. Please feel free to come drive the car if you would like. Car is located in Baltimore, MD 21230. Ive tried to accurately and honestly describe the car as best as I can, but that is not a substitute for you driving and looking at the car yourself, or having a mechanic take a look at the vehicle. All the body damage is just cosmetic, and car runs fine. Alignment is straight and no frame damage or uneven tire wear. The only reason I'm looking to sell this car is because we have three cars.
