Vehicle Detail
Beautiful 1966 Ford Mustang GT convertible! Runs excellent! Nearly as one would have bought new from the dealer, just nicely improved. 289 A-code V-8, 5 speed manual transmission, air conditioning, Rallye-Pac, Pony interior, styled wheels, power top, and more. The engine is nearly as original except for an Edelbrock intake manifold and an Edelbrock 4-bbl carburetor. T-5 five-speed manual transmission replaced the original three-speed manual. Clutch and brakes (front disc) are excellent. A newer two-pot master cylinder and proportion valve has replaced the original. It has the original air conditioning system that blew cold the last time I used it about two years ago. It has a newer Flowmaster dual exhaust system. Original Emberglo Metallic paint color was offered only in 1966. Matching emberglo/parchment Pony interior is in very good condition. Powered, white convertible top is about six years old and also in very good condition. Original DSO was Houston, TX and I bought it in Oklahoma City, so I presume it to be a southern car; it sure looks like it. The gauges, panel lights, and exterior lights all work as they should; all new headlights and tail light bulbs this spring. The interior courtesy lights do not work and the amp gauge discharges when the fog lights are turned on. Original AM radio is in the dash (non-working), but previous owner removed the glove box and had installed a Panasonic stereo/CD player. Speaker wires run to the floors in the rear seating area where large boom-box speakers can be connected (speakers come with the car). It was a nice, professional installation, but not for me so I never used it. The Rallye-Pac rpm (6000) gauge works perfectly, though the clock does not. The car was born on January 11, 1966 in Dearborn, MI with a 289 A code V8 (6F08Axxxxxx), as a convertible with Pony interior (76B), painted in Emberglo Metallic (V), with Emberglo Crinkle Vinyl & Parchment Crinkle Vinyl Pony interior (64); and delivered to Houston (62) with a 3.00:1 conventional axle (1) and a three-speed transmission (1). With all of the original factory options and subsequent aftermarket upgrades, it's virtually impossible to determine if this or any 65-66 Mustang left the Dearborn factory as a GT. This car has all but one of the features of a true GT. The one feature that may be lacking, special reinforcements in the rear floorpan and frame rails for the dual exhaust, is a split decision - one feature says "yes", the other feature says "no". There seems not to be a reinforced floor pan under the back seat for the dual exhaust hanger brackets; but there is a definite obstruction that prevents a finger from going forward under a tubular bar that is in the frame rail. Access is made through a plug hole (plug removed) that is located in the trunk just rear of the fender well, in the middle of the channel that is molded for the frame rail (the plug can be seen in the photo of the left-side trunk). It doesn't look like the floor pan has been replaced, it looks good and it looks original. I'm a good mechanic, but I don't profess to be an expert on Mustang floor pans, so I'm unsure which is the stronger of the two indicators. As noted previously though, this car has the other indicators including two punched holes in the radiator mounting bracket for the fog light wiring, the tail lights come on when the fog lights are turned on,13/16" front sway bar, front disc brakes, A code engine, dual exhaust trumpets through the rear valance, high ratio steering box, GT badges and striping with no evidence of covered holes from removing standard Mustang ornamentation, GT fuel filler cap, etc. This is a very nice car that has been loved, but it's not a trailer queen. Older, partial restoration is still very good, but I've had to fill some small paint chips along the rocker panels and on a corner or two. A small area of paint is starting to peel in the engine compartment, and a small bubble the size of a dime has just appeared on the rocker panel in front of the left rear wheel (see middle of blurry photo). The body is solid; the floorpans, shock towers, frame rails, etc. all look to be original. A rubber door seal is missing on left door and the windows don't align exactly as they should (probably needs new door hardware). As you can see the tires have lots of tread, but my Goodyear tire mechanic thinks one or more may have a flat spot from sitting. There is a slight vibration at 50 mph. Tried everything we know to do (high-speed balance, alignment, tested shocks, etc.), new tires would be next. Extra parts include an original Mustang console (not from this Mustang) that I was going to restore and install, but haven't yet. This has been a great car for me as it will be for its next owner. My priorities have changed and she doesn't get the attention that she deserves, so she sits in my garage under a cover. I have driven her just more than 2100 miles since late 2007. I have described the car as accurately as I possibly can. Listed locally, so I reserve the right to end the auction early. Buyer pays all transaction and shipping expenses from Northern Virginia.
