Vehicle Detail
1951 Bentley Mark VI Saloon 4.6L This Mark VI was just revived from an eight year slumber in dry storage. It fired up with a fresh battery and I drove it to the shop and have been driving it for the last several weeks. I took care of some minor issues that included tightening the rear motor mount (in which someone had replaced all the rubber already), new fan belt, and installed new intake gaskets. Otherwise, everything else just came to life on its own. It's a respectable entry level car for someone looking to get into the British car market with something unique, or a very solid candidate for someone looking to do more. Below is a description by category of its current state. Mechanical Mechanically, like I mentioned above, it has sat for awhile, but I've been driving it locally without issue. As stated before, I took care of some minor issues that included tightening the rear motor mount (in which someone had replaced all the rubber already), new fan belt, and installed new intake gaskets to correct a vacuum leak. The only known chronic issue is with the transmission. Under certain conditions it will pop out of 3rd and the 4th synchro isn't always agreeable, but otherwise no noise, etc. It’s at the point of being either a you-can-fix-it-and-be-done, or just learn-to-live-with-it, sort of thing. The front motor mount may need replacing as the engine isn’t cradled quite as firm as it should be. Nothing else has cropped-up -- brakes work fine, car runs well. Judging by the front backing plates, it looks as though the previous owner worked them over extensively. They look to have been removed, blasted, and painted. Car runs well, drives well, and handles well. The tires are matching 4-ply 6.50-16” Commanders. Paint and Body While very presentable, the paint is not without its blemishes. The current owner has owned it for about 10 years and I suspect the paint is probably about 15 - 20 years old. It was a nice job when done and is still very presentable. Either drive as-is and live with the defects, or make some spot repairs and it would be really clean. There are two areas approx. 3 in. square on the rear inner rockers that are rusted, but otherwise the underneath is solid. The left front fender has a rusty area growing from below the parking light. Those are the only notable areas of deterioration. It is available for inspection on my lift. The paint is chipping along the hood hinge, the left hood lock, and misc. other areas of stone chipping on the rear fenders. Again, a very presentable "20 footer". Nothing to be ashamed of for a driver. If you have questions about specifics, please don’t hesitate to ask and I can email more photos, if needed. The overall condition of the glass is good with no delamination, cloudy spots, or cracks. The drivers door window does have a seven inch long diagonal scratch on the inside (noted in photos). The brightwork has not likely ever been replated with exception to the radiator shell, which is brighter than the rest of the trim. It does have a bit of a wrinkle to the left of the badge when facing it. The bumpers, handles, belts, etc. are in average condition for a driver quality car with aging consistent for being 61 years old – light scratches, dings, pin spotting, etc. Three-of-four hubcaps are in nice shape, the fourth has some plating issues that look like a previous owner tried to conceal with paint (shown in photos). The storage compartment beneath the trunk is equipped with its spare, factory jack, and such. Electrical The wiring looks to be original and in serviceable condition. All of the lights work as well as the trafficators (the right one hangs a little, but pops right up with a touch of the finger). Interior The interior was probably replaced at the time the paint was done. The leather is in very nice shape, as is the headliner. Some of the door panels have marks and / or discoloration on them consistent with age and use, minor "arm wear", etc.(there is some variable in shading between photos due to the time of day when taken, but the overall color is consistent.) Overall, the woodwork is in nice condition with some small areas that could benefit from refinishing or repair. Summary This stately vehicle will hopefully fill a void in somebody’s collection. I stress that this is a driver quality car and shows such in terms of minor wear and use. It is impossible to cover every detail, but we feel our listing is accurate and honest. Serious buyers can make arrangements to see the car in person and take it for a test drive (and are encouraged to do so). Likewise, while we will not reveal it, we feel our reserve is very reasonable. This is the first time this car has been listed for sale since the current owner purchased it about ten years ago.
