Vehicle Detail

1987 Mercedes-Benz 280SE 4.5   Excellent unrestored car.  Just serviced! Please scroll down to view all photos and the complete description! Up for auction is a wonderful unrestored 1972 Mercedes 280SE 4.5.  This car is finished in dark green with palomino MB Tex interior. It is in excellent running and driving condition.  The car has just been extensively serviced using only genuine Mercedes-Benz and the highest quality German parts. The engine was just tuned up with new plugs, wires, cap and rotor.  New Mercedes-Benz belts were installed along with new radiator hoses and a thermostat.  All fluids have been changed, including the transmission, rear differential, and power steering.  The engine starts easily hot or cold and runs well.  It does not smoke and there are no leaks or drips under the car of any kind.  The transmission shifts smoothly without any flaring, slipping, or banging.  Tires are recent Michelins in the correct size.  Exhaust is generally in good condition, but does have a slight leak.   The paint is in excellent condition!  It was repainted in the mid 1980s with a correct single stage paint in the original color.  The body is straight and has no major rust or filler.  The only rust on the car is the common area in the rear quarters... please see the pictures below.  Front fenders are clean and solid. In the interior of the car, the seats are original and only show minor wear.  Same for the carpets.  The wood on the dash board wears its original finish and has no major water damage.  The air conditioning blows cold and is charged with R12 refrigerant.  All the heater controls move smoothly and the heater blower works at all three speeds.  The Becker radio is a stereo model and works well and has a matching cassette deck in the glove box. The paint shows very nicely with only a few chips around the car. Tires are matching Michelin X Radials in 205/70R14.  They only show minimal wear. Correct Bosch wiper blades with new rubber inserts. The worst of the rust can be see here... it was repaired in the 1980s but will need attention again in the future. Same for the drivers's side, which is a bit worse. New hood pad. Recent Mercedes-Benz battery. Trunk holds a spare as well as the original tool kit. Interior is clean and honest. There are cracks in the dash board between the speaker and the instrument cluster, and a crack at the top of the driver's door panel. Three point belts for the front passengers.  All power windows work, but the passenger side front jumps a little. No funny smells... it smells like an old Mercedes should! Lap belts for the rear. All instruments work, including the odometer and clock. Odometer indicates about 21,000 miles.  The title indicates the actual mileage of the car is 121,000.  Milage will be slightly higher than what is indicated here since the car is being driven occasionally. Working heater controls and AC.  One original master and one original valet key are included with the car. Becker Europa Stereo with matching cassette deck.  Original owner's manual packet (not shown here) is also included. Excellent head liner Comfortable at 70mph! Now, a bit about me:  I'm a quality engineer in the automotive industry.  If you've used the radio or navigation system in a Mercedes E class or S class in the last 10 years or so, you've seen my work.  Collecting and working on classic Mercedes is my hobby, not my business, but I've been at it for about 15 years now.  I believe that original is the only way a car should be restored, and enjoy making great cars out of good cars.  This is for sale to make room for more cars and more projects, wherever or whatever they may be! This car is often located in Teaneck, NJ, but will most likely be stored at my office in Fairfield, NJ during and after the auction.  Please feel free to contact me at (973) 953-3418 to arrange an appointment to see and drive the car.  I recommend an in-person inspection of the car, just to ensure we're all on the same page and there are no surprises.  I'm happy to work with your shipper and welcome international buyers. Remember:  This is a 40 year old car.  This car is far from perfect, but it is a nice example of a 280SE 4.5.  It will make an excellent hobby car you can enjoy for many years with proper maintenance and repairs.   Your chance to inspect the car and ask questions is before the end of the auction, not after!  Please do not hesitate to contact me. Payment must be made in full within 7 days, unless arrangements are made prior to the end of the auction.  Payment in person must be made in cash.  Payment by mail should be a bank check and sent overnight, or by wire transfer.  Car can not be picked up until funds clear.  Car must be picked up within 21 days of the end of auction. On Aug-10-12 at 06:05:25 PDT, seller added the following information: Of course, this is a 1972 Mercedes-Benz, not a 1987! Sorry for the confusion.
