Vehicle Detail

1984 Pontiac 2000 Sunbird LE ConvertibleRuns Well, Shifts Well, Some Problems, No Rust, Clean Title For sale is a 1984 Pontiac 2000 Sunbird LE Convertible. These are fairly rare cars, coming at the forefront of the 1980s resurgence in building convertibles. The car had a new engine installed in 2009 (GM crate engine, not rebuilt) and that engine has a bit under 30k miles. Transmission shifts smoothly and car accelerates well. The car is in good cosmetic condition overall (no rust, no dents, only minor dings), but does have a few mechanical and cosmetic problems, which are pictured and described here. Power top goes up and down smoothly. Car is located in Philadelphia, PA and has a clean Virginia title (I'm a Penn graduate student) with no liens or surprises. Car is sold without guarantees, but guaranteed to start and run and drive. I've been the owner since 2008, and I'll answer any questions not addressed here in the description. If you want to ask questions, my cell phone is 701-208-2107. Texts preferred but calls also encouraged. I would like to note that I'm aware of the supposed title/odometer issue from Experian. As you can see from the details, there is no rollback, just confusion due to the 5-digit odometer. The "exceeds mechanical limits" calculation from 1998 is something that is automatically applied to cars over a certain age with a 5-digit odometer in some states. The car was originally an Ohio car, and is rust-free, leading me to believe that a reading of 39k in 1998 is far more realistic than 139k, because the car could only have been driven in the summer and garaged to avoid rust. The mileage over the last 14 years is only 46k, which is similar to 39k for the first 14 years. I'm disclosing everything I know about the car, and I've driven it as my main car for five years. I've sold lots of large-ticket items and want to make sure that the transaction goes smoothly. As you can see, the car looks good for its age, but I want to make everything as clear as humanly possible as far as pros and cons. Pros: Straight Body, with no rust. Genuinely no rust.No dents or accidents, only a couple marble-sized dings on doors. Front fascia/bumper in very nice condition.Starts up every time.Paint is pretty good overall, and shines up well. Black paint.14" American Racing magnesium wheels.4 tires all have more than 60% tread, and all have been replaced in last 15k miles. 215/60R14 tires.1.8L OHC (Overhead Cam) FI (Fuel Injected) 4-cylinder engine has less than 30k miles since being replaced in 2009.3-speed Automatic Transmission shifts smoothly.CD/Cassette/AM/FM 2-DIN Radio. Prestige P-153B Model.4-way power driver's seat and power passenger seat. Both work without problems.Convertible top goes up and down smoothly.Glass is good all the way around (only dime-sized rock chip on bottom of windshield, but passed Virginia inspection easily in 2011).Brakes redone in 2009 (about 15k since then) and the car stops very well.Door panels are in excellent condition. Fit and finish is quite tight for the era.New suspension in 2008, car handles very well.Vinyl top does not leak (though needs new rear vinyl window, as noted below).Rear-view and side-view mirrors intact and work well.Windshield wipers work on all settings and fluid works.Cruise control works well and stays at set speed over long distances.Donut spare in trunk.New radiator in 2011.NO check engine light on, nor any other warning lights. The car has a new battery and spark plugs from late 2011 (part of a tune up).The car fared well on a trip from Philadelphia to Virginia Beach (about 700 miles round-trip) this April, but due to the minor coolant leak (and the radiator fan issue if you are driving in traffic or heat), be cautious and check fluids if you are going to drive the car a long distance before having it looked at. Caveat emptor and such.I average about 21 mpg city and 28-34 mpg highway in the car, and I track my mileage carefully. It gets its best mileage between 55 and 60 mph due to the way the cars were geared back then. Problems: Radiator Cooling fan does not kick on. Could be relay or motor. Possible minor coolant leak, but I've driven it on short-medium highway commutes for months without problem. Car has new radiator (November 2011), so any leaks would be from a hose. Keep this in mind if driving any distance or in traffic before getting repaired.Windows do not go up and down from driver's side control panel. A/C compressor was replaced in 2009 with rebuilt, but needs recharge. Rear vinyl window has a tear (pictured) and needs to be replaced. Top has a small rip at one corner, though this occurred a few weeks after the new top was fitted (from tension putting the top down). Overall the pinpoint vinyl is in nice shape.Fog light control switch doesn't work. Small area of chipped paint on lower left corner of back bumper (shown in picture).Interior has a couple smaller rips (driver's, armrest, and very small on back seat).Very small chip off plastic panel that overlays the instrument panel. (Above upper warning light gauge). This is a fun car, and a car I loved deeply, but I'm moving north to a cold climate in a few months, and I need more space, and this car is not ideal for either, at least not as an only vehicle. I guarantee the car to run and drive upon arrival. There are no warranties beyond that, and I require $400 deposit within 24 hours of the auction closing. Thanks again!
