Vehicle Detail

You've heard of the 7 year itch? This van was my 23 year itch. I like old Econolines. I first saw this one in 1980 and it had 690 miles on it. I tried to buy it then, but they would not sell it. I stayed in touch, watching it age and accumulate a few more miles. In 2003, I finally purchased it and drove it off Reynold's Aluminum property for the first time since it was new. It then had 1,290 miles on it. It now is nearing 1,900 on the odometer. I've had my fun with it, but I need the garage space for another ride. They used and abused the van, but serviced it regularly. In fact, they changed the oil every two months! That explains the wear on the air cleaner and engine area. They also replaced the brakes and shocks at regular intervals. On-site mechanics took care of everything, including installation of the cherry light, siren behind the grille and an engine clock in the dash. It shows less than 800 hours running time. Everything works just like it is supposed to. As I said, they used the van hard. At some point, it was scraped down the passenger side. They fixed it and then obviously hit the same obstruction again. It also had a minor hit on the right front corner. Even though the seam there has a small split there is no cancer there or anywhere else on the exterior or underside of the van. The only spots of rust are on the inside braces of the side doors and one roof brace. None of these spots are going through to the outside so they would be an easy fix. The van was stored in a shed onsite and I've kept it garaged. The roof paint is excellent and the van is probably 90% original paint. All of the glass is original with no chips, cracks or discoloration. The rear window seals have shrunk but repops are available. All windows operate smoothly. The interior is as close to original as you will probably ever see. Driver seat springs are damaged due to the size of the guy that drove it, but there is no damage to the seat cover. The left front spring sags a little for the same reason. Must have been one big dude! All gauges are nice. Being one of the last early Econolines built, it received a metallic black steering wheel with matching shift indicator cover as they ran out of the solid black ones. Steering wheel is mint perfect. Floor mat was sliced to install the button for the siren. Dash was scratched installing the switch for the roof light. Original stretcher and litter, which was carried on the roof, are included. Hooks on side are for the litter. The van was meant to take accident victims to the gate where it would meet a real ambulance, so there wasn't alot of emergency equipment carried in it, but there is a checklist and most of the original stuff is there. There's even a checklist of employees and their medical problems. The van runs and drives great for a short (90 inch) wheelbase with solid axles. It still has the original tires! The rears were replaced when new with snow tires. I drove it the first two years I had it on the originals and then stored them away. The original wheels have never even been balanced! I have a set of Ranger steel wheels with nice tires for driving and transport. Carb was rebuilt last year. It is not the original. The fuel pump has also been replaced. Other than that, it's all stock. It even has the rare fiberglass fan shroud in excellent condition. It has a few minor leaks fron the engine and tranny, but very minor. 1967 was the only year these vans received a dual master cylinder, and this one works great. I could go on and on but the pictures should answer most questions. The passenger mirror is a stainless instead of the correct white one, which was missing when I got it. All doors open and close nice. Another great thing about this van is the documentation. It has the original window sticker, a nice build sheet that was folded up in the glove box, the warranty card still attached to the instructions and the metal data tag. The van has a couple rare options including the metal check straps on the rear doors. They didn't license it till 1976, and all the registrations were piled in the glove box, too. This van presents a lot of opportunities to its next owner. You can fix the lower damage and rent it out as a movie prop, restore it, or use it as a base for a custom van knowing the drivetrain will last forever and with the automatic it would drive nice. Or you could do what I did, and just leave it alone because they can only be original once. That's one of the reasons that I have never buffed it, or bothered to clean up the scuffs and dirt on the inside areas. The van is a time capsule to a simpler life. A low-mileage red Econoline just sold for a little over $6,000 but had lots of rust, lots of replaced parts including a front door, and no history. A ScoobyDoo replica failed to meet reserve at $19,000. You could build your own Scooby van with this one as the reserve is much closer to the red van. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions. Only trades I'd really consider are old Econolines, cause that's what I like!On Jul-19-12 at 22:14:44 PDT, seller added the following information: I just want to add that in at least one picture there are lumps on the body. These are just water drops from rinsing it off before I took a picture. There are no rust bubbles on the outside or underside of the van. The front bumper is also not the original, but I do have the original one. It was bent a little so I replaced it. They never mounted the front license plate on it and lost the plate mount, but I have a correct one to go with it, too. 1967 was also the only year for stock backup lights, and this pair is very nice. On Jul-22-12 at 12:08:40 PDT, seller added the following information: I hope this works. It's a link to Photobucket with more pics, including the underside. I also should mention that at some point they replaced one of the hinges on the first side door. They didn't bother to paint it, it was just a work truck to them. http://s227.photobucket.com/albums/dd86/terrystoys/AMBULANCE/#!cpZZ2QQtppZZ24
