Vehicle Detail
No reserve auction for the rare 1958 model VW pick-up. Only 19142 were made in 1958, and maybe a third of these were exported to the United States. This truck has many mechanical upgrades and needs a new owner to finish the restoration of the body. We recently acquired the truck, and realize it is beyond the scope of a project we are comfortable with. The body has rust issues as shown in the photos. However the running gear is in great condition, and includes many upgrades, and tons of receipts with parts and work done to the engine and drive train. This truck runs great, starts easily, and cruises down the road with ease. This is a truly rare VW with a ton of potential. It gets looks where ever it goes. Mechanical 1). The truck has a completely rebuilt full synchromesh transaxle. Replaced in 2004, it has a taller 4th gear to allow higher cruising speeds. It will readily cruise at 55-60 miles per hour, and has a higher top end. 2). The engine was replaced in June of 2000. It was a totally rebuilt 1600 with a big bore kit making it 1776CC. We think the mileage on this engine is about 12-15,000. It has a newer carburetor, timing degree wheel, distributer, coil, starter, and all the other various components. 3). The electrical system is converted to 12V 4). The braking on the front has been changed to a later disc brakes system. All the components were rebuilt or new. This does require a different wheel to accommodate the brakes. There is two spares in the “trunk” one for the front and one for the rear. 4). The speedometer is a newer model, the original is gone. Works well and is accurate. 5). The headlights and turn signals work, but high beams are out. 6). Gas tank was replaced, but the gauge does not work. The engine starts up great and really runs well. Shifts well, the linkage is a bit loose and takes a little getting used to, but this is the first one we have driven. Has good acceleration power and goes down the highway well. Body and Cosmetic 1). The body has rust issues as shown in the photos. The roof has some denting, and obviously the paint is bad. 2). The doors are pretty solid and the hinges seem good with little or no sag. 3). The frame, from our cursory inspection, looks to be solid. 4). The fold down sides work okay, and the storage compartment latch works. The floor in the storage compartment is very rusty. 5). Interior is poor. Seat has been recovered with a seat cover. The floor has signs of rust. 6). The glass is all okay. Basically needs completion and we are not going to tackle it. Fun to drive, it handles well, and reliable. All receipts for the previously mentioned work are included with the car. Shipping or pick-up is the responsibility of the buyer. $500 immediate PayPal deposit, balance by check or MO with-in 7 days.On Jun-16-12 at 17:57:59 PDT, seller added the following information: I forgot to mention, I have a pair of 1958 New Mexico License plates that can go with the car. The new owner, if in New Mexico, can register the plates dated 1958. Sorry for the confusion on the gas gauge, There is no gas gauge in the vehicle. The gas tank was replaced and can be hooked to have one working. The odometer in the VW is from a later year. Thank you for all the interest. On Jun-16-12 at 19:00:50 PDT, seller added the following information: If you would like to test drive the VW, please contact me and feel free to drive the vehicle. I have had some individuals test drive the vehicle already, I can not end the auction early, this is an absolute sell, high bidder wins this Classic VW Bus.
