Vehicle Detail

1976 Volkswagen Thing Clear TEXAS title 47,000 Kilometers on Odometer Convertible with ROLL BAR RARE Hard-top with new LEXAN windows New side curtains Windshield wiper blade is new and operates well Needs NO body work, paint is new ALL over Battery tilted over and damaged floor pan(See CONCERNS below) TOWING BRACKETS ON FRONT BUMPERNO RESERVE BEYOND LISTING PRICE This is a truly hard to find THING. When the EPA and Volkswagen decided that making the VW “Stand-up” engine comply with clean air standards was too costly, they stopped bringing the Thing and Bug to the U.S. from Mexico, BUT THEY CONTINUED PRODUCTION AND SALES in Mexico and other countries. I purchased this vehicle from a cousin as a project car for my grandson and me but when he figured out how much elbow grease was involved in preparing the car for primer and paint he changed his mind. That’s when I went to a professional body person. It is in very good mechanical condition. It has just had a major tune up and is ready to go (Points, condenser, plugs, synthetic oil, and a cold engine valve adjustment). The body is in excellent shape with no active rust. I bought the vehicle in from my cousin in Mexico who had owned it for the last 20 or so years. It has a hard to find hard-top. . If you are out of state, and want to fly in, I can pick you up at the San Antonio airport, any serious buyer is more than welcome to come see and drive the car in person. please call me with as many questions as you want at 210-843-9733, if I’m not available leave voice mail and will return calls asap. . I don't believe that the odometer is accurate, it reads under 45,000 kilometer and my cousin remembers one rotation of the odometer for a total of 145,000 kilometers ( or about 89,900 miles) The condition of the vehicle is very solid. My cousin let this vehicle sit with occasional short trips and oil changes but not much other use in the last few years. THIS IS AN OVERALL DESCRIPTION OF CONDITION: Body- I gave this vehicle a thorough restoration when I acquired it. The paint is not a exactly factory color because they no longer make them, but I got close match in high grade ($250/Gallon) paint and had the painter take off the lights, and gas tank to scrape down to the metal, spray on primer and then paint the inside and outside of the body. The floor and rockers are solid . When I had the hole from the battery spill repaired, I had the welder cut beyond the edge of the corrosion damage to make sure it was an extra strong repair. I purposely left the undersurface of the pan unpainted so a potential buyer could inspect it before putting undercoat for future protection. Engine and Transmission- I DID NOT LIKE THE LOOKS OF THE CARBURATOR SO I PURCHASED A BRAND NEW ONE AND HAD IT INSTALLED, IT WORKS GREAT!!!! This is the factory engine to my knowledge. It is a good, strong running engine that does not have any known issues. The transmission is a 4 speed manual that shifts and works great. Interior- The interior has Volkswagen Bug front bucket seats in gray cloth, the rear seats and fold down backs have been refinished and look in brand new condition. There is no radio but plenty of places to install a discrete stereo. Tires- The tires have about 50% tread on them and look good enough for a good while. Top- The top is solid fiberglass and in good condition but needs minor adjustments to make it even more weatherproof and quick removal easier. The rear and side windows are brand new LEXAN and very attractive. This is a fun car to drive and it attracts a lot of attention!!!! $500 down within 48 hours of the sale via Paypal, only cash or Paypal accepted when you pick up locally. Good Luck Bidding and feel free to email me with any questions. You can phone me at 210-843-9733 from 8:00 AM to 10:00PM CST.. Things were made to be rugged and durable, so the interiors of VW Things were not designed with creature comforts in mind (you know, like carpet & door panels. That would be too fancy schmansy for a thing). The idea behind the interior design was that if your Thing ever got wet you could just stick the car in the sun with the top down and it would simply dry out. . VW Things are very rare in any condition and they don't come up for sale very often. They were only imported to the United States from the huge VW plant in Puebla Mexico for two years - 1973 & 1974 but they continued to be made and sold in Mexico and other countries. To find an example as good as this one is almost unheard of. CONCERNS: -Flat windshield glass has no safety glass markings on it as required for US. The Safety Inspector did not comment on this BUT it may be a good preventative step to change out this flat(Inexpensive) wind shield. -As I mentioned above, at sometime in the past the battery tilted over and the acid weakened the floor plan under it. When the body person pointed this out to me during the body restoration, I had him weld in an oversize plate that completely repaired the damage. I recommend that after you inspect the outside of the floor-pan you should have the pan undercoated.
