Vehicle Detail
1969 Mercedes Benz 300SEL 6.3 Barn Find!Up for auction is an extremely rare 300SEL 6.3 with a combination of options that likely make it one of the most unique 6.3's in the world. It has been sitting in a barn in Oregon for the last 30 plus years. Chassis number 10901812000796 started out life in Germany and was brought over to Oregon in 1972. It came off the factory line with 180G Silver paint and a dark blue velour interior. It was ordered with factory driving lights, rear mounted fog light, rear writing table, flexible reading lights, rear curtains, Becker Grand Prix Radio with Rear Remote, factory fire extinguisher, FLAMM air horns, Becker AutoTelephone, center mounted ashtray in wooden console and only displays 86,000 Kilometers on the odometer. This car will require a complete restoration and will be no easy feat to complete. It has very bad rust in the rear rocker panels and the left side of the trunk. Loads of metal work will need to be done. This is, however, one car that is worth the effort. This is how I found the car. It had been sitting in this barn since 1975. The proverbial BARN FIND! I blocked the car for safe transport and accidentally killed a bat living in the rocker panel of the car. As you can see, this car is in need of a complete restoration. It has major rust issues in the rear rockers and body panels. The underside of the car is surprisingly solid aside from the rear panel directly below the rear bumper. The car has only 86,000 Kilometers on the odometer (roughly 50,000 miles) and the beautiful blue velour interior and walnut wood reflect that. On top of a wonderfully intact interior, the car boasts a collection of super rare options almost never seen on W109 chassis Mercedes. The door panel handles have mold on them that can easily be removed with some careful cleaning. The car sports an ULTRA rare Becker Grand Prix with Rear Remote function that still works. It also features a rear writing table, flexible reading lights one both sides of the rear cabin, rear curtains, a factory installed fire extinguisher, FLAMM air horns installed by the factory, a rear body panel mounted fog light and the popular euro style driving lights. The dash pad and dash wood are in near mint condition. There are absolutely no cracks on the dash pads. The original carpeting is also in excellent condition and have been protected by heavy duty matting installed over them. The heater levers are the strong European version which do not break like their weak US counterparts. The top of the dash pad is mint. In the second picture below you can see the Becker Rear Remote adaptor mounted below the passenger seat. The classy euro model Becker Grand Prix radio is in perfect shape. The fascia wood on the dash is in amazing shape. As you can see below, the wooden center console also has a rare factory ashtray installed the front portion. The factory installed fire extinguisher mounted below the drivers seat and the flexible rear reading lights can also be seen. In the picture of the reading light you can see the end of the rear curtain rod. The left rear rocker is the worst area of the car with massive rust holes and disintegrating metal. The left rear trunk well is also gone. That will need a complete new panels as well. The stickers in the door jambs show the last few services the car had in 1973 and 1976. This is one of the most original engine bays I have seen considering that all factory Gemi clamps are still present, the zip ties are still on the sensor cables and the spark plug wires are still original. Most engines have been through the hands of so many inexperienced mechanics that all these things are missing. The first picture below shows the original FLAMM compressor for the unique air horns. The last picture shows the horns themselves. The extra production page I sourced from Mercedes shows that they were installed at the factory, which is extremely unusual for a 6.3. The last registration on the Oregon plate shows 1976. The second picture shows the original oil filter canister sticker still present. The last two pictures below show the original data card that came with the car. I found that in the trunk. The data card shows the original recipient of the car was a company called J. Tomasi in Bissingen, Germany (presently Bietigheim-Bissingen). A kind club member has informed me that the factory went out of business in the late 70's and a Fired Department now stands at that address. The keys are in excellent shape and still have the dealer key protector on the keychain showing the dealer name AUTOHAUS JANLAK. The pictures below include the data card and the complete production page show all the special KW OPTIONS. Translations are located at the beginning of the auction description.
