This SUV is being sold as a Mechanics Special. Please read carefully: This 2002 Ford Explorer XLT runs and drives but the engine is making significant noise. From what I understand, it has thrown a rod. This engine may be repairable, however, I recommend that anyone who considers purchasing it is prepared to do a full engine replacement. The SUV runs and drives. I drove it about 3 miles. On that test drive I never exceed 45 miles per hour. It seems to function fine. Aside from the obvious engine noise, the transmission shifted fine, the cruise control worked (I tested it) the air conditioning blew cold, all the power windows worked, the exterior power mirrors worked. We did have to jump start it. The previous owner said it has been sitting for about 2 months. So, I don’t know if the battery needs to be replaced or if it was just sitting for so long. When ever possible, I make a Ford Explorer my daily driver. They are, in my opinion, one of the best driving Luxury SUVs available. Second, you can take lots of people and stuff with you. Third, VALUE, a Ford Explorer XLT offers all the upgrades and features you want, at a fraction of the price of many of it’s competitors. It drives like an import for the price of a domestic. Fourth, inexpensive maintenance. A Ford Explorer is a very reasonable vehicle to have repaired or simply maintained. No costly specialty mechanic needed, and a lot of work can be done yourself! First Impression: This SUV features many Options. The Leather Interior, 3rd Row Seating, All power options, tow package, 4x4, and more upgrade this Explorer. The XLT takes you up a notch, and it comes with, aluminum wheels, lighted vanity mirrors, exterior door pad for entry/locking vehicle, and exterior entry lights. Standard equipment also includes a Securi-Lock passive anti-theft system, a rear wiper/washer with defroster, remote keyless entry, roof rails, cruise control, illuminated entry, and power windows, door locks and mirrors. Exterior: The overall appearance of this SUV is Nice! The exterior color is described as Toreador Red Clearcoat Metallic Exterior. This primary body color is accented with beautiful touches of Black, Dark Gray and Chrome. You will find the primary body color is a very attractive red color with lower body accent panels. This dark gray accent is a nice offset without being too overbearing and is classy not tacky. Black accents continue with Dark Factory Tinted Windows, Rear Bumper, and Roof Rails. Chrome Accents are abundant. There are Factory Alloy Wheels, Front Chrome Color Grille, and Explorer XLT Badges. This Explorer is riding on a set of Factory Alloy Wheels. The Wheels are Beautiful 16" Alloy Wheels that are in surprisingly good condition. There is really no curb chew on them and only 1 is missing a center cab. The tires 235/70 R 16 and are in fine condition with plenty of thread left. The exterior styling of this SUV is Awesome! The lines are aggressive, the overall look is large and in my opinion this SUV is what an SUV should look like. The front headlights are large and have sharp crisp angles. The headlights are clear and clean. Front Fog/Driving Lights help to set off the front of this Ford. The side view looks really great with the factory tinted windows and black roof rails, some of the paint is chipping. The door handles are painted to match the white body color that adds to the overall appeal of this SUV, offering a more streamline look. Notice the lower body molding is a slightly darker gray color. Again, This coordinating color scheme looks Awesome! A Ford Explorer even looks good from the back. The hatch can open in one piece or in 2 pieces. You can either let the window stay open for a nice breeze or you can open the whole thing. This makes it super convenient to load and unload stuff and cargo. The rear tinted window has its own wiper washer and defrost. There is also a tow hitch with light hook up. This Explorer has remote exterior side view mirrors. There are also lights on the underside of these exterior door mirrors for entry light. This is a great feature and something I really love about a Ford. The tinted windows add a nice touch to the SUV. It helps maintain the cabin temperature, helps protect passengers and items inside, and reducing annoying sun exposure. 3 Passenger entry handles make getting in and out even easier. This Explorer has fully remote locks. There is a full set of keys including 2 Key Fobs and one key. There is an exterior door key pad, I forgot to ask the previous owner for this code and need to try to get it. There are also exterior entry lights. When you unlock the suv with the remote, exterior lights turn on momentarily to make entering the suv easier and safer. There is a number pad on the driver side door. This is used to lock and unlock the vehicle without the key or the key fob. You will get so spoiled by this feature. Never worry about locking your keys in the car. Or, go ahead and lock them inside while shopping, at the gym, or taking a walk. It reducing the amount of weight and clutter you have to lug around. Press the combination once to unlock the driver door. Press the last digit of the 5 digit code again to unlock all the doors. Press the last two digits at the same time to lock the doors. Plus, have several people in your household, you don't have to hear anyone asking where the keys are to get something out the SUV, they can just use the keypad and get their items out without hassle. Very cool! The front of this Explorer is very commanding. The headlights are clear and clean. There is a front license plate holder for the states that require it. The color combination looks classy and the amenities make this suv practical for every day use and Enjoyment. This is being sold as a mechanics special, so we have not done the usual detail/reconditioning. Accordingly, you will find some usual wear. There is a door ding on the rear passenger door. There are some scuffs in the same area. There are some scuffs on the rear bumper and please notice that the rear bumper driver side is a little out of line. These are all small issues. Interior: The Interior of this SUV looks Really Good! Just like on the outside, the interior continues with a neutral color combination of Tan and Black. The color is a Light to Medium Parchment color I would call Tan. The seats are done in High Quality Leather that holds up very well and the color is beautiful. I love the light tan color, it is not too hot in the summer like a black interior. With Plenty of room, this 2002 Explorer covers all the basics and then some for a nice ride. The front seats individual captain seats. These seats are very large and comfortable. The front seats have high backs for added comfort and stability and large cushions for added leg support. There are four adjustable height shoulder belts and 4 adjustable height head rests. A large lower cushion increase leg support and thus makes for an suv that is easier to drive. This full leg coverage reduces drive fatigue. The driver’s seat is fully Power. You will find complete power options including power height, tilt and front to back. The Power amenities include power windows, door locks, and mirrors. Notice you also have a large cubby on the bottom for storage on both front doors. Integrated into this door panel is a cup holder, way cool! One of the things I like about this Explorer is that the lower panel of the door is hard so that if you push it open with your foot, you don't damage anything. Being small, and normally trying to carry too many items at once, this is very helpful for me. The steering wheel is leather and has lots of controls. The wheel has the cruise controls on it for easy access. This is very convenient and increase safety as you are less distracted while driving. The center console is loaded with features at your fingertips. The AC is Icy cold and the heat is cozy and warm. There is front and rear air conditioning. You will also notice that to the left on the center console are your 4WD controls. Having these buttons at your fingertips makes any terrain super easy to navigate! The floor console houses a rubber lined cubby and pen holder. Things in this area do not slide around. There are also 2 sturdy built in cup holders, an ac adaptor and a smaller cubby. The padded armrest opens up for even more storage, including integrated change holders. You get a front glove box with this Ford Explorer. There is also a set keys including 2 key fobs. There is an owner’s manual in the glove box. The 2nd row of seats is very convenient. You can seat 3 adults here. This bench is a 40/20/40 split. You can fold each side of the seatback down in any combination you like. On the back of the center console here you have fan control and 2 pull down cup holders and another AC Power adaptor. The rear cargo area can be as big or as small as you want to make it. It is carpeted and has tie downs. You can haul a lot of stuff with all of the seats down in this SUV. You will also notice there is a 3rd row seat in this Explorer as well. You can fit 2 more adults back here with shoulder seatbelts. This seat folds flat into the floor of the SUV allowing for easy cargo storage. Overall the Interior Condition is fine. Please see the pictures for all the specifics about this suv. Under the Hood: This 2002 Ford Explorer has the ultimate combination. With a 239 Horsepower 4.6L V8 engine you never want for power and the 4WD lets you go wherever you want. The transmission shifts smoothly and also operates exactly as it should. There is a factory tow package so you can take what you want with you when you go. The steering is easy and the brakes are smooth with no pulsating. Driving Impressions: I drove this car for approximately 3-4 miles. I got it up to about 45-50 miles per hour. It seemed to function fine. The previous owner told me that she had a new transmission installed about 3 years ago. No, I do not have any documentation on this so please do not ask for it. The transmission shifted fine on the short drive I took it on. Any requests for a test drive or on site inspection will be honored with close supervision so that no additional damage to the motor occurs. This is for the benefit of all bidders. In general, I love driving a Ford Explorer because they are not too big to park or maneuver, yet big enough to get everything in it that I need. They have a commanding view of the road which makes it easy to drive. The Car fax is clean and clear with no title issues, no accident issues. It shows as a 4 owner. However, I know that the 4th transfer was the previous owner removing her ex husbands name. She said that she was the second owner, purchased the car in 2003 and paid it off in 2007. Now, the CarFax shows that it was sold in 2007. Either the previous owner was mistaken, or CarFax is making a mistake. Updates and Redesigns make this Ford Explorer an understandably Popular SUV. Responding to earlier complaints about ride quality, engineers devised an innovative independent rear suspension described as a porthole-in-frame design. Instead of having half-shafts that reach over or under the vehicle’s frame, the shafts in the current Explorer poke right through holes that are drilled into the frame. In addition to a refined ride, this configuration allowed a lower step-in height in the new version. The floor pan has also been dropped by 7 inches. As a bonus, additional space is now available for the installation of an optional third-row seat. This modification allows a seven-passenger capacity. Ford engineers attempted to improve the Explorer’s ride, and they succeeded. Unlike the prior-generation 2001 Explorer, which was quite truck-like in nature, its current replacement comes across as more refined and car-like; it yields a pleasant and somewhat gentler ride. While this SUV certainly rides and handles differently from a sedan, it produces a ride experience that’s suitable for a modern, if still truck-based, SUV. The Explorer’s performance is clearly adequate with V-6 power, and still reality fuel efficient. The Explorer is easy to drive, and it maneuvers adeptly and handles capably enough. It is stable in tight curves. The reduced step-in height makes a noticeable difference in the ease of entry. This model Explorer is highly appealing and continues to be one of the most popular SUVs on the market.
