Vehicle Detail
1964 MG Midget Mk II Great Little Classic British Roadster! Here is a nice looking and good running little Midget from an excellent vintage. Recently taken out of long-term storage, we're delighted with how well it cleaned-up and how it performs on fresh fuel, oil and plugs. The "Mark II" was made for only three model years, and combines the chrome and vintage styling charm of the Mk I with such niceties as roll-up windows, exterior door handles, and more comfortable semi-elliptic springs for the rear axle. Original equipment knock-off wire wheels are a very nice option not seen on Midgets often enough: They make a neat little car look like a true British Roadster! The Olde English White exterior has a matching top, which was an original factory option. It's another unusually nice touch! Since tops are almost universally replaced in basic black, this makes a nice aesthetic statement at your local MG club meets. Although this car starts well and go down the road very nicely, it would really be improved with some attention from a sympathetic owner who regards it as a rolling restoration project. Examples: The interior is scruffy; we could not get the dash lights to illuminate; the turn signals work when they please; the wipers do not wipe; the bonnet is poorly attached at one hinge (making it a fussy to open and shut - see photo!); the floor panels have holes (although they have been patched with metal from the inside), etc, etc...The car needs a spare wheel & tire, a jack...Stuff that's easy to find and generally easy to repair. But, there's a lot to like here, too! We couldn't find anything major wrong with this car, so to us it looks like a dream car for someone who likes to putter in the garage on weekends. The paint looks good from a few paces, but it was somewhat casually applied: Thin in some areas, drippy in others. The top is in good shape, except for one broken snap button (easiliy replaced) and one small tear at the trailing edge (where it won't let water into the car). Overall, it's certainly no show car, but it makes a good impression as a "driver-grade" old MG: One you can enjoy showing off in the parking lot at work, but not worry about it while it sits outside all day. In some ways, it looks better underneath! There are rust holes in the floorpans which have been covered with pop-riveted sheetmetal – Simple and effective, although a better solution would be to install new pans (which are readily available and routinely welded-in on these cars). The frame is solid, and the seams and floor in the trunk look very clean. The sills and inner fenders also look good. The rear springs were replaced with new ones, and the shocks have been rebuilt (all still have their paper stickers on them, so there are evidently not many miles on these items). This adds up to a solid feel on the road, with a very good ride (for a small British sports car!), and stability in turns and over bumps that gives real confidence. The wire wheels are straight and true and track straight. The brakes work well without issue. The transmission shifts ok, but can grind if the driver is not being careful. First gear is noisy (straight-cut first gear in these boxes!), but the other three are smooth running and quiet. Reverse is easy to engage, and the lever never jumped out of any gear. The owner says the box was rebuilt before he put the car away, and we have no reason to doubt him. We cannot vouch for the veracity of the odometer (it says 45352, and we have no way of telling the actual miles on this car). However, the growly little "A-Series" engine sounds like it could run forever on the open road, and 60 MPH is just about right for cruising with the top down. This machine has been parked for several years, but started up easily. Before attempting a start we drained out the old fuel, which looked clean -- no rust or scaling came out (which can only be a good sign!). We drained and refilled the engine oil with fresh, also pulled the plugs and fogged the cylinders to prevent scoring upon start-up. We topped-up the gearbox with a pint, put in new Champion spark plugs, added some fresh gasoline, filled the radiator with 50/50, jumped the battery, and it popped over pretty quickly. To our amazement, after blowing out the cobwebs, it settled into a smooth idle. We have road-tested this little Midget carefully for about twenty-five miles (enjoying every mile!), and it has started and run well since. For long term durability and reliability, we'd recommend changing the oil and filter again very soon, along with draining and refilling the transmission, differential, clutch slave, and flushing the brake system as well as the cooling system. We cleaned the contacts on the points, but it would probably be advisable to do a good old-fashioned tune-up pretty soon: Cap, rotor, points, condenser. If that all sounds like the makings of a fun weekend, then this could be a match made in heaven: You and your '64 MG! This little Midget is a direct descendent of the 1954 TF Midget we are offering right now on another eBay auction!
