Vehicle Detail
This listing is for an original owner, 1986 Nissan 300ZX bought in Panama City, Florida with the R. Straman convertible conversion. R. Straman of Costa Mesa California converted Rolls Royce and Ferrari automobiles into convertibles before turning their attention to the 300ZX. They only produced 352 examples and the option added about $7000 to the sticker price of the car, bringing it up from about $14,000 to $21,000, in 1986. The conversion was featured on the cover of Motor Trend magazine, as shown below. This car is fully loaded, with leather power seats, power windows, power and heated mirrors, automatic transmission with overdrive, and power 4 wheel disc brakes. It has never been wrecked but was repainted about 5 years ago due to the sun damage sufferred in Florida. The paint work is still nice and shiney but by no means a high end job. There is no rust at all. The radio was replaced with a Craig AM/.FM/Cassette deck. The a/c compressor quit working but wasn't replaced since the car was always driven with the top down. It sat unused, for a couple of years because of a missing key and some lost interest by the owner. The retainer for the cover used on the car left a dent (see picture) on the driver's side front wheel arch. 18 months ago, a friend asked me to get it running for them. I had a new key made, changed all of the fluids, belts and filters. I put in a new battery and she fired right up. I drove the car and found that the tires were all out of round from sitting in place, and so 4 new tires were added. I have driven it on pretty weekends ever since with no additional problems except the need to replace a leaking master cylinder. The owner has offerred to give the car to me, for my efforts in getting her going but I have way too many other cars to drive and take care of. I am selling it for her, instead. The car is quiet and smooth. It handles well. It is fairly solid, with slight cowl shake over big bumps. The original top is in place and only has a little fraying where the driver's window hits it. If it ever needs to be replaced, a top for a 80's Mercedes SL fits. The top goes up easily and is covered by a snap on tonneau, if desired. The interior is in great shape, especially for a convertivle. There is a very small puncture in the middle of the driver's seat cushion. I believe the pictures should tell the rest of the story. If you are looking for an inexpensive way to get wind in your hair, this is the car for you. It will accomodate a big driver, with plenty of head room with the top up.. All the usual wear items like paint, belts, battery and tires are already done. The car handles well and is very easy to drive. By the way, It has the groovy 80's electronic gauges that will alert you, with a woman's voice, if you leave your lights on or your door open. All of these things make it a bit of a time capsule of mid 80's Japanes luxo boulevard cruiser.
