An Airhead is a BMW motorcycle of the type that was built from when they first were produced in 1923, until they were finally discontinued in 1995. Technically they are referred to as the "Type 247" family in BMW-speak. They are two cylinder aircooled motorcycles with the two cylinders opposed to each other, therefore the cylinders stick out from the sides of the motorcycle and are cooled by the passing air, which is where the airhead moniker came from. Airheads, having been discontinued since 1995, are now owned and ridden by those who appreciate their simplicity, quality, and unique characteristics. A very active and loyal community of enthusiasts exists, and those who ride Airheads are often called Airheads themselves. Dry weight is 505lbs on this shaft driven supersport bike that is set up completely for sport touring. See the pictures for close up view of the hard bags and all the storage for touring conveinence. Seat height is 31.8in., ground clearance is 5.51in., 85.6in long, 58.2in. high, and the frame is a steel double cradle. Suspension on the front is cartridge type with 6.89in. of travel. Rear suspension is Mono arm and shock with 4.76in. of travel. Brakes are twin disk on the front and drum in the rear. Fuel capacity is 5.81glns. and was rated with a top speed of 114.95mph. Here's a listing of the extras: this RT is equipped with a 400W Omega charging system from Motorad Electric (a big upgrade!), the Alpha ignition from Motorad, progressive front suspension, Worx rear suspension, new Dunlops on front and back, LED brake lights for added safety, a shearling seat cover from Heartco, a new parabellum windshield, dip stick with thermometer, auxillary diriving light kit from Motolites, and a deep dish oil pan. The bike has been completely inspected and safety checked by our local authorized BMW facility here in Fort Myers (report on hand) and the bike has a clean bill of health. If you talk to the tech's who work on and know these airheads you will find out they are a cold blooded beast. You must choke them to cold start and you must let them warm up for a couple minutes before hitting the road. The bike only charges when you are giving it throttle so at idle the generator light comes on and this is typical but, unnerving if you aren't familiar with it. The locking latch at the rear trunk behind the seat doesnt lock completely and needs changed or just bungee tight the lid while riding, thats what I do. Just a fantastic bike for the money. If you are that discretionary collector of choice BMW motorcycles you will want this one in your stable. This bike is only going to become more and more collectible.
