Vehicle Detail

For sale is a 1996 Ford Ranger XL with a camper shell (easily removable) and a nice, long bed. White w/ a 2.3L 4 cyclinder engine, automatic transmission and am/fm stereo. Great for hauling things or just for driving around town. Located in San Francisco in the SOMA area. Must be picked up locally. Starts / drives but is starting to have some issues (see below...) Condition of Truck The Good - the car starts and drives. Most mechanical components work fine and up until now, this truck has been very reliable (I've had very few issues). Gas mileage is good for a pickup truck, generally about 25 mpg on the highway. Large flat, front seat bench is spacious and makes for an enjoyable ride. Cargo capacity is enormous. Loved using this for surf trips and when moving. Has never been in an accident. No flood damage, etc. The Disclosures - I will try to be as honest and comprehensive as possible in disclosing the defects of the car. First, blemishes. Car was typically parallel parked in San Francisco and as a result, the bumpers are pockmarked with quite a few nicks and scratches. Expect nicks and scratches generally throughout the truck. Front bumper may have some paint smears. No accidents. Just some scraping that occurred when (mis) parallel parking. Rear bumper is off-kilter (see pictures), this is due to me backing up into a city street sign. Truck was fine, bumper was jolted. Also, seat cushions around drivers side are beginning to rip. Car has heating but only vent (no cold air). My dad, being the guy that he is, never bothered to get air conditioning. The odometer currently reads approx 151,000 miles. However, the odometer is actually running slower than it should and has for at least a year or so. My best estimate is that the true miles of the car are somewhere in the 160,000 - 170,000 neighborhood. The transmission. The reason I am parting with the truck is the transmission. Truck has an automatic transmission which has started having a problem - it delays when shifting into gear. This doesn't happen all the time and in fact, often I can drive the car for hours (once it heats up) and not have any issues. The problem usually occurs when starting cold. I took the truck to a mechanic to determine whether this was due to bad fluid or other issues but the mechanic confirmed (as I thought), that the transmission would need a rebuild. This mechanic is very highly rated and if possible I will put up the mechanic's invoice with notes from their diagnostic. Due to this condition, which is potentially dangerous, I may request that the buyer sign a liability waiver prior to taking the car on the road. Timing belt. In addition to the transmission issues, the timing belt is due for a change. Bottom line - this could be a great truck for someone with the time and inclination to purchase a transmission rebuild kit (which is pretty inexpensive) and go through the motions themselves. Me, I'm a tax attorney and this is just my surf and moving truck (have a nice, new VW suv in the garage). So I'm just gonna let this go. Smog - car did pass last smog check. Last test was shortly before September, 2010. Have not taken it to get smogged since and so I cannot say for sure whether or not it would pass. Local purchase - pay by cash / check / money order - or prepay me with paypal. No seller financing available. Buyer and seller to complete all paperwork and if possible, head to the DMV to process everything so that the car is transferred and the release of liability is filed. Happy bidding. No reserve. If you have any questions, feel free to email me. I will do my best to answer your questions. Thank you. Doug On Feb-19-12 at 18:20:46 PST, seller added the following information: PS!! - I Will Pay For the Smog Inspection!! - Just realized a smog inspection is required by the California DMV for sale. I will pay for this! (Sorry for not mentioning this earlier, I didn't even know it was required). If the car does not pass smog (and I cannot remedy the problem within 5 business days), then the winning bidder will have the full, unconditional and absolute right to cancel the sale, and in that case will have all deposits and payments totally refunded. PPS - DMV / Odomoter / Title Issues - someone brought an issue to my attention. After the smog inspection, I will have to put report the truck's mileage to the DMV. To make this match with the smog records, I would have to report the mileage showing on the odometer (not the higher mileage which is probably more accurate). Technical issue. But just wanted to put this out there for clarification. I am fine with reporting the odometer mileage to the DMV - just so long as the buyer has a clear understanding that (1) I believe the odometer is not working properly, and (2) I believe that the mileage showing on the odometer is probably inaccurate. For any other questions, please feel free to call or email me. Thanks. Doug415-816-9320
