Vehicle Detail
1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass S Hardtop (442 Clone) Up for auction is a 1972 Olds Cutlass S Hard Top with the original, rebuilt 4 speed Muncie M21 Transmission. I also have a High Performance, balanced, bored .40 over, run-tested Oldsmobile 455 Engine that can go with this vehicle. When I started this project a couple of years back, I had a Las Cruces, NM Machine Shop build me a high performance Oldsmobile 455 engine so that I could turn my Cutlass S into a 442 clone. However, after researching the production numbers (www.442.com/tech/442figs.html) and finding out that only 7800 1972 Cutlass S cars were build out of a total of 10,344 total Cutlass and 442s built that year, I decided to restore my car back to a Cutlass S. I was about to have the machine shop rebuild the original, matching numbers 350 Rocket engine, when my business started having financial problems. The original engine was never rebuilt, but it was torn down. I have the original pistons and rods, but I’m trying to get the original engine’s block, crank and heads back to include with this listing. If you want to just build this vehicle into a 442 clone, I am including a run-tested Olds 455 HP Engine with the following new parts and with the cost that I purchased these items in parenthesize. I also have the Ebay receipts that will go with the buyer for most of the parts I purchased, to include: Dish Top Pistons w/ 1.720" CH...Premium Moly Rings, Silvolite 1631...10.1:1 Compression for .40 over ($440.00); Rochester Quadrajet Carburetor ($298.50); Reproduction Evaporator Box A/C ($195.90); Summit Wire Loom-Red ($50.34); Chrome Water Pump ($109.95); Chrome Water Neck $17.50); High Volume Chrome Fuel Pump ($38.00); 8.5mm Spark Plug Wires ($49.98); Old 455 Motor Mounts ($47.00); Olds 455 Frame Mounts ($79.00); Billet Manual Flywheel for 455 ($149.64); V8 M/T Engine Wiring ($128.90). New distributor, double timing chain, new harmonic balancer...I am in the process of trying to find these receipts. The ENGINE alone is worth at least $5000.00. I hate to sell this restoration project, but because of a family emergency and my need to move to Virginia to be close to my son and his family, I’ve decided to sell my 1972 Olds Cutlass S project and the recently built, run tested, Olds 455 Engine. Like most of my auctions, I’m starting this listing out at just over ½ the value of the HP Engine alone with NO RESERVE (scary…scary). I believe the engine alone is worth at least this much. On top of that, the buyer will also get a rebuildable Cutlass S with tons of new parts, and I believe the car is also worth at least the starting price of this auction. So either way, the winning buyer could have a super fantastic deal here! The Olds Cutlass S was purchased brand new in 1972 from an Alamogordo, NM Dealership (Sacramento Motors) and has remained in this area its entire life. Alamogordo has very low humidity and thus the vehicle has minimal rust. The car has rust in the more common places. (NOTE: I apologize for not having more profile pictures of the car. My Cutlass S is presently stored in my storage unit behind another restoration project. I plan on going to my storage to take 3 more pictures to add to this lising.) The two front fenders, behind the wheel openings are rusted through (if you need a picture, I can email you pictures of the rusted front fender areas). Patch panels should eliminate these rusted areas very easily. I can see rust on the rear quarter panels (under the paint) behind the rear wheel opening as well (See picture 12). The trunk lid has some surface rust (See picture 14). The roof also has some sort of bondo??? work done (See picture 13). Finally, the roughest part of the car for me is on the cowl; where the bottom edge of the windshield sits. It is rusted here the most and should be replaced with a new, reproduction cowl, in my opinion (See Pictures 9, 10, and 11) . You can buy the required replacement cowl online for around $300.00 or go to a junk yard and remove one from a Cutlass S or a 1968-1972 Chevy El Camino…Yes an El Camino. The cowls are identical. The rest of the car, by what I was able to determine has only surface rust. The floor pans and trunk pan are good; inner wheel wells look good; and the underside of the car looks good. By the vin number, this car was originally a single exhaust, 4 barrel vehicle. This vehicle now has dual exhaust. Included with this Cutlass S is the following new, reproduction, and used parts (with the cost that I purchased these parts in parenthesize). Again, I have most of my Ebay receipts, which I will give to the winning buyer. The following parts are included with this Cutlass S: 1) An original 442 Center Console in very good condition ($494.95...See Picture 17); Air shocks ($77.20); Door Jamb Windlace ($59.00); Dash Cap ($94.59); Cutlass Speedometer Floor Shift ($89.00); 19 Piece Weather strip Kit ($259.00); Reproduction arm rests ($52.52); 11” Chrome Booster ($105.00); Reproduction Grilles with Stoneshield ($382.00); Steering Wheel Center-Black Used ($19.99); Firewall Insulation Pad ($42.00); Windshield Installation Seal ($20.90); Rear Window Glass Installation Seal ($20.90); Reproduction Rear Factory 3 Piece Spoiler Kit ($250.41); Body Lock Windlace ($58.00); 4 Ball Joints ($35.59); Oldsmobile Cutlass Bucket Seats ($390), plus original bench seats are still in the vehicle (See Picture 21 &16); Pitman arm, Drag Link & Idler arm ($139.98); Rear interior panels-original used ($69.77); Firewall Clutch Rod Boot, New dome light, Paint Seal Kit, Radiator Seals, Door panel water shields, Hood insulation, Inner door handle seals, Inner handle springs, Under dash Insulation Kit, and Battery Tray Mat (all for $171.95); 2 Pkgs of Wing Bolts ($81.55); and Windshield ($179.00...See Picture 20). If you need me to scan and email any of these receipts, please email me. ((NOTE: I also have receipts for a Rear Deck Filler…which I remember seeing recently, and a Dash Panel Patch ($194.90); a 442 Hurst 4 Speed Comp Plus Shifter ($353.80); and a pair of Lower Fender Patch Panels ($119.00)…..I need to locate these items, and if I do, I will add each of these located parts to this listing)). A deposit of $100.00 (non-refundable) must be paid within 24 hours of the close of this auction. The remaining balance must be paid within 7 days, unless other arrangements are made. The balance owed can be paid when the buyer comes to pick up this vehicle, the 455 engine and all the parts. Buyer is responsible for arranging transport for this vehicle, turn-key 455 engine, and parts. I know several local people that may be able to transport or assist you with transport if necessary!! I also have an engine hoist in my storage unit to lift the engine onto a trailer if needed. If you have no feedback please email me before bidding.
