Vehicle Detail
For your consideration is a 1968 Mercedes Benz 280s in the very beautiful w108 body style. I bought this car back in September in Phoenix with the hopes of fixing it up and using it as a neat local daily driver and then reselling it possibly. Unfortunately I began to pour more money than I anticipated into the car and it turned out to be more complicated that we could have imagined. The person I bought it from was probably not entirely honest and told me that the car ran great until the fuel pump started leaking. I thought that if all that was wrong was the fuel pump that this would be the perfect fixer-upper. So I purchased the car and had it towed all the way to my home from Phoenix, then had it towed to my mechanic's. My Mechanic put in a brand new fuel pump from Mercedes Benz of Phoenix and I also bought a brand new battery. We got the car started but then my mechanic suggested that I have the carburetors rebuilt because the car ran rough, so I ordered a kit from the east coast for the dual Weber carbs and we rebuilt those and even brought in another mechanic to rebuild them and tune them. After all of this and months of waiting, and paying fees, the car still ran rough and my mechanic told me he was not knowledgeable enough about the car to try to figure out what the trouble was, all he could tell me was that there is something wrong with the timing. At this point I only hope to get back some of what I put into the car. I bought the car because it still looks very classy and the body panels are very straight and are in generally good shape. There are a few dents as you can see in the pictures, one is on the front passenger side quarter panel as well as under the head light area. The panels look good with very little rust, or surface rust on a few spots. There is another dent on the trunk where it looks like someone tried to slam the trunk down onto the spare tire. The bumpers and all the trim is there. The interior seats look pretty nice with no rips or tears, but the back seat looks out of shape for some reason. The front needs floor mats and there is no radio. I bought a brand new Blaupunkt Radio to put into the car after we got it running and I will give it to the winning bidder if they want it. The previous owner told me that he took the wood off the window trim with the intention of refinishing it all, and those pieces are all in the trunk (see picture). Perhaps this would make an ideal project car for an at-home mechanic with a passion and knowledge for old Mercedes vehicles. Or perhaps someone could use the car for parts and trim, some of which seems to fetch quite a premium price on Ebay. The Dash amazingly only has one crack, and the dash wood is all there but has crackle in places. I have not tried to drive the car after it was towed from the mechanics place. Interested parties are welcome to come to look at the car which is parked in Blythe, California at a friends house. I have a clear Arizona title for the car. Buyers are responsible for arranging for shipping, shipping costs and pick up of the car. Perhaps a good mechanic can pick up a good deal on the car if he has a dolly? In any case, I am happy to answer questions or to send more photos if needed.
