Vehicle Detail
1970 Porsche 911E This was a wrecked 911E when I bought it several years ago. Being wrecked I knew it would never be a rare and valuable car so my goal was to reassemble (not restore) it to drivable condition. The rear had been bashed, so had been replaced, including an aftermarket whaletail assembly and rear bumper. The rest of the rear appears to be genuine Porsche although I’m not sure about the metal wide fenders. They look real from a later model. Being a short wheelbase car it looks good and should handle well. I spent quite a bit of time rewiring and reassembling everything, including one coat of paint over primer. Looks OK from a distance but needs at least one more coat after some sanding. The body has very little rust. The engine is a 74 911S 2.7, which originally came with CIS fuel injection, but when I bought it the Zenith carbs from earlier years were on it. The previous owner stated it had just been rebuilt, and it appears to be but I can‘t prove that. All the instruments are original and all I can test work, including the clock, oil volume, even the low fuel level light. Lights, turn signals, dome lights, horn, etc, all work. The odometer appears to be the original and I've listed the mileage from the title, as the car has not been driven any miles since then. The title states"exceeds mechanical limits". I cannot test the oil temperature gauge nor the alternator because I cannot get the engine to run but a few seconds at a time. It turns over and starts, but dies almost immediately. This is likely related to carburetion. It is also possible the rebuilt engine may have something wrong. I’ve checked compression and ignition timing and spark was getting to all 6 plugs last time I checked. I’m not a Porsche mechanic and don’t have the time to become one. (I’ve discussed the car with 4 different Porsche mechanics in the area but none have interest in looking at an old car, being busy with newer models.) Bottom line, I don’t know what is wrong. Note that when running, the car will move in 1st and reverse, and the transmission shifts into all gears, so seems fine. Some specifics: 74 911 engine, type 911/93. (Porsche 911 Performance Handbook© says for USA 911S and Carrera), 70-71 5 speed transmission (reverse up on left), relined clutch disc, Alloy front brakes, Sunroof, Reupholstered rear seats, Aftermarket older front seats, New rear window, 15” wheels, new rear tires 245/60R15 (front 195/60R15), Painless Wiring fuse box, CIS system ready to try including working fuel pump (CIS seems complete but there may be piping challenges putting high pressure lines into car designed for carbs), No heat exchangers. Current exhaust goes through cutouts in fiberglass bumper; can be changed to anything. Extra “rusty” muffler assembly. Capacitive Discharge Ignition, Front air dam ready to be installed if desired, Several other new or used smaller parts I never got around to using. This will be a good project car for someone educated in Porsche engines, or someone looking for a Small Block Chevy conversion, or someone who just needs a lot of parts. If the complete car doesn’t sell, look for the parts to show up on eBay through the winter.
