Vehicle Detail

This auction is for a 1971 BMW 2002. It has spent its ENTIRE LIFE in California, 28 years of it in a heated garage! ZERO RUST! I bought this car from the original owner (I still have the original BLUE California plates last registered in 1982). Story was, the owners late husband pulled the head because it overheated (faulty radiator) but then discovered he couldn't figure out how to put it back together....so there it sat till I picked it up. By the way, ODO read 21,000+ miles. Oh yeah, it has a FACTORY Sunroof! My intention was to put a new head on it, give it a tune up, and drive it to my hearts content. Haha....this is 2011, and it took a lot more than those pipe dreams to get her to where she is today. 20 years ago when I used to play with these cars, they littered the local Pick-A-Parts, so when I strolled in after I got this car, they laughed at me. Whoops! All that said, I ended up having to do the following things to get her in the condition she is today. First, I had to buy another car to use as a donor for this one. It was beat up and got nailed in the rear by a drunk driver, but the motor was strong. Compression was uniform across the board. I went this route as opposed to buying a head because I didn't know the conditon of the existing bottom end. This way, I could actually hear the engine run! Before I dropped in the new engine, we completely went through it making sure it didn't need any new seals, lifters, etc. I also decided, because there was a push dent in the front and another in the rear (about 3-4"....nothing major), to clean the engine bay after removing the old bottom end, and to paint the whole car. I went to a shop which used exact color matched Colorado Orange Sherwin Williams paint. Actually, I think they inputted the original BMW color code (4) in the computer and matched it that way. It came out pretty good. Some overspray on the window seals (a tiny bit but I am picky) which I was going to replace but ran out of funds. Ok, so now the paint is done, time to drop the motor. Before I did so, I bought a new SACHS clutch kit and replaced all the necessary stuff. She still has a bit of noise which sounds like a throwout bearing and a tiny grind going in to second, and when I asked the mechanic who helped me, he said the SACHS kits have a lifetime guarantee so it can be re-replaced if the new owner wants to do so. I can help with that. Ok, so clutch is done, time to drop the motor. I did so, but made sure to replace the plugs, plug wires, points, cap, rotor, and water pump! I also took the radiator to a shop and had them flush it, pressure test it, and fix any and all leaks. New hoses were also replaced where needed. The drive belt was in good shape, but I replaced that as well. Time to fire it up! I did so and she ran like a dream, but remember, she sat in a garage for a long time, so there were other things that needed attention. ALL of the brake lines needed to be replaced, along with the wheel cylinders. The clutch master also needed some help, so she got replaced. Exhaust hangers were old, and were replaced. The two front tires were old and bald, so they were replaced! Ugh. Why were the two front tires bald? Because the ball joints were crummy, the joints on the center link were toast, so all those were replaced......and to top it all off, after I did all of this, the ignition got stuck, so I went to BMW and bought a brand new one! The entire thing, not just the key cylinder. I am sure I have missed some stuff, but lets just say that I did A LOT OF WORK!!! Parts that were missing were the rocker trim, a couple pieces of beltline trim, center console, door handle inserts, and I think that's it. I replaced all of that. This stuff is expensive when you can't find it at the Pick-A-Parts. Oh, the headlights were junk, so I put some Hella H-4's in that were in a box in the other car I got. A slight modification, and they were installed. Nice! After all this was replaced, time fot the test drive. I was stoked. Need I say more. Great acceleration, no smoke, breaks work fine, all the lights work, blinkers work, etc. Just a real fun ride and wow, have I gotten stopped by people at the gas station, the grocery store, even while driving. The peeps can recognize a classic when they see one!!! Some things that I don't like.....The passenger door handle lock is a little finicky. I do not like these seatbelts. I can't seem to adjust these darn things to fit my build. I'd rather have the newer ones, but wanted to keep them original. Window regulators are a little funny, but both work. I have a replacement one from the other car if someone wants it. The drivers seat has a couple of rips in the butt area and the passengers seat leans if you give it a bunch of weight. Maybe missing a tab or something? Shift boot is ripped (big whoop...but like I said, I am particular). I said earlier that I ran out of funds or else I would have got the trunk vinyl covered plywood inserts. They are available at 2002ad but most non-lazy people just build their own. That's about it. Again, this car has spent 100% of its life in Southern California. That said, there is ZERO RUST that I can find. Nothing in the spare tire well, nothing in the drivers side floor pan (or the passengers side), nothing on the rockers, nothing under the front window, NOTHING that so much as resembles rust! SHOCK TOWERS ARE SOLID!!!!!!!! Overall, this is a nice classsic 02. Painted using it's ORIGINAL Colorado Orange color. Drives well. Has some quirks that I mentioned, but what doesn't that is 40+ years old. FEEL FREE to ask any questions you have. Additional pics available as well. The ORIGINAL BLUE CALIFORNIA PLATES will be included to the winning bidder. For some reason when I registered it at the AAA, they gave me new white plates. Said I had to go to the DMV to change them back. I do have documents showing that they were original to the car. Even have the original Dealer license plate frame and dealer plastic plate (they were on and behind the blue plates). Registered for a year! Thanks for looking 100% POSITIVE FEEDBACK AND A 4.9 DETAILED SELLER RATING IN ALL 4 CATEGORIES, SO BID WITH CONFIDENCE! A $500 DEPOSIT IS REQUIRED WITHIN 24 HOURS OF THE AUCTIONS END VIA PAYPAL, CASH, OR U.S.P.S. POSTAL MONEY ORDER ONLY WITH THE BALANCE TO BE PAID AT TIME OF PICK-UP OR BEFORE IF HAVING IT SHIPPED! I WILL HELP IN ANY WAY I CAN WITH A SHIPPING COMPANY OF YOUR CHOICE (MEET THEM NEAR HOME, ETC.) MY RESERVE IS MODEST ( I SET IT AT WHAT I HAVE NOTED OTHER SIMILAR CARS HAVE SOLD FOR LATELY) AND IS ACTUALLY FAR LESS THAN MY TOTAL INVESTMENT, NOT TO MENTION THE HUNDREDS OF HOURS I HAVE SPENT TRYING TO GET THE CAR FROM WHERE SHE WAS WHEN I GOT HER, TO WHERE SHE IS TODAY. I MAY LOSE MONEY, BUT SO BE IT. IT'S CHRISTMAS TIME AND, LIKE I SAID, I THOUGHT THIS WAS GOING TO BE A LOT EASIER. DOING THINGS CORRECTLY ISN'T CHEAP!!!
On Dec-13-11 at 16:58:46 PST, seller added the following information: I forgot to mention this at the time of the listing, but ZERO FEEDBACK or anyone with LESS THAN 10 FEEDBACK, please email me BEFORE bidding or I will retract your bid.
