Vehicle Detail
Vehicle Description This is a custom 1974 Jeep CJ-5. I bought the Jeep 10 years ago in December 2001 in this condition. The previous owner completed a frame off restoration while he owned it in the 90's. He was a private Jeep builder located in New York. This was his personal Jeep that he drove and showed to clients as an example of the type of work they could do. When it was restored, a new odometer was installed showing zero miles. I bought it with 28,877 miles - all post restoration. As you will understand from reading this listing, any mileage on the Jeep prior to the build is not relevant. After 10 years of my ownership, the mileage is only 31,328. I've only put 2,500 miles on it. Most of those miles were put on in the first couple of years. In the last 7 or 8 years, I've only driven it about 500 miles. I have always garaged the Jeep and it hasn't seen rain or snow. It has only been used for fun and never for commuting. It has always been registered, insured and inspected. Here is the information detailing the restoration and build from the previous owner with some “notes” from me inserted. A thick folder of receipts is included. - Started by completely gutting and throwing away most of the old jeep. What was kept? The frame, axles, transfer case and some of the old wiring are the only things salvaged. Which meant the project was going to be long and extensive. - Once the Jeep was stripped down to the frame it was then completely sanded, inspected, repaired, strengthened, and painted so we me have a nice strong chassis to start with. - Suspension system: Trailmaster springs with new Rancho shocks along with custom made front and rear sway bars and heavy-duty shackles. (Note: I believe the suspension has 2” of lift, but I can't find a record of this.) - The rear axle is a military spec Dana 44M and completely rebuilt with a Detroit Locker. The front is a Dana 30 with TrueTrac limited slip. Both are running 4:27 gears. - Tires are 33 x 12.5inch BFGoodrich on ten-inch wheels. - There are custom made heavy duty front and rear drive shafts connected to a rebuilt Dana 20 Transfercase. - The transmission is a Muncie M21 four speed with a 3:51 first gear from a 1969 corvette. This transmission has been completely rebuilt bolted to a Hayes clutch. Shifter is a Hurst Competition Plus. - The motor is a “Chevy 355” four bolt main. (Note: This is a 350 bored 0.030" over.) The block and parts were purchased from Summit Racing along with a Steel Crank and was delivered to us with extensive work done to it. Internal components are: - TRW 30 over pistons connecting rods and bearings - hydraulic Competition Cams lifters, camshaft is a crane 260 degree - Double Roller timing chain - Elderblock performer intake manifold - Carter 625cfm 4-barrel carb with electric choke - 1976 port and polished heads built for today’s fuel - high volume oil pump - Carter high volume fuel pump - Advance Adapters motor mounts - shorty headers bolted to custom 2 ½” dual exhaust with FlowMaster 50 Series mufflers - heavy duty 3 core radiator - new wiring and battery cables - GM HEI ignition (note: when I bought the Jeep, it came with an extra MSD system. I installed it, but could not get it to run right so put the HEI back in. The MSD module is still on the firewall, but it isn't hooked up to anything.) - very large K&N air cleaner/filter - new 21-gallon fuel tank - Jeeps Body is completely fiberglass with fenders flares (Note: from 4WD Hardware) - Custom made Fiberglass Hardtop and doors with SunRoof, Rear Defogger (Note: Top is from AJ's Fiberglass Bodies and Tops) - comes with a Supertop soft top and bikini top (note: I never used either one, but I have box of HW from prev owner) - The grille is authentic Jeep, which came from another CJ - Every bulb along with its lenses from front to rear was been replaced. - Dashboard is from a ’85 CJ with a NEW Jeep Odometer (note: odometer started at zero and reflects mileage since restoration) - Front seats from '85 CJ. They have covers. Half inch rip on driver seat's cover. - Fold and tumble rear seat - All the seats have seat belts - Four-point roll bar that is completely wrapped with foam padding. - Grant steering wheel - Nerf bars - Warn 6000-pound winch and remote control. - Stainless Steel bumpers - 80’s side mirrors - CARR flip light bar with Four 100 watt KC Daylighters with KC light covers - Conferr 4inch roof rack with adjustable height bracket - 2-½ inch tow receiver - Additional rear back up light for those extra dark places, switch on dashboard - Heavy duty Custom rear back tire carrier that does not touch the body (note: there is no spare tire) - Array of Auto Meter gauges (oil pressure, water temp, voltmeter) - Large tack on steering column - Kenwood cassette stereo mounted in console with two Pioneer 5inch dash mounted speakers (note: don't expect much from sound system - speakers stink and exhaust system is loud) - Fire extinguisher mounted on side of roll bar I have a large folder with a lot of paperwork and receipts from the previous owner and myself which will be included with sale. Most of the parts are from Summit, Four Wheel Drive Hardware, and Advance Adapters. A lot of work and a lot of high end parts went into the restoration... and a lot of money. Google some of the parts mentioned above and between the fiberglass body and hardtop, engine, winch, lights, differentials, etc. The Jeep has 31,328 miles and over ten years of use since the build. The motor runs very strong and it has a lot of torque. This is the only 4x4 I've ever owned. The 4.27 gears, lifted suspension, extremely short wheelbase, etc, make it drive very differently than a car. If you've never driven in something like this, it is something like an amusement park ride. We kept the top off all the time and my kids loved riding in the back. When I first started looking to buy a Jeep 10 years ago, it was because I was selling a 2-seat AMX and I wanted a four seat convertible that I could put my kids in. The tires have some tread left for street use, but if you plan to drive in the off-road in mud, you probably will want new tires with full tread. Wagon wheel rims have some surface rust and could use wire brushing and repaint. There is no spare tire. The spare tire carrier is part of the hitch which could be used if you want a spare. There are some of chips in the fiberglass, see right fender on the front and at the bottom behind the right front tire. Some drips have developed from limited use of the years. Nothing requiring fluids to be topped off, but enough that I park on corrugated to keep my floor clean. Rear differential case, oil pan, transfer case. I checked some of the bolts last year and was surprised to find them loose. There have been years where I only drove it once or twice. It is better for cars when you use them on a regular basis to keep things tight. We just haven't found time to use the Jeep much through the years. Rather than hanging on to it indefinitely and taking up a lot of space, finally made decision to sell it. The clock doesn't work. The other gauges are all working. Heater fan works. Directionals, brake lights, headlights, etc all work. The radio works. There are two small speakers in the dash, but they have no baffles behind them so sound quality is poor. Horn works. Reverse lights work, plus there is an extra toggle switch activated back light (like a mini headlight). The fiberglass top has a sunroof and full side doors and rear door. The side door have latches plus slide bolts that need to be locked when driving. The Detroit Locker in the Dana 44M rear is one of classic “hard lockers.” It is the ultimate in bullet proof and traction and causes the tires to chirp on tight turns under throttle. The front is a TrueTrac gear driven limited slip in the Dana 30. Emergency brake works but doesn't hold well. I think because of the oversized tires. You could either maintain and work with the Jeep as is, or you could make a project out of it if you want it to be in tip top, pristine condition. It is an old restoration, so don't expect a fresh restore. However, the fact that it was converted to a Chevy drive train and fiberglass body already, and has high quality, heavy duty parts, are the best things about the Jeep. Based on other Jeeps I see in the market, these attributes are hard to find together. It has the light bar, winch and roof rack too. Comes with soft top. No matter what your plans for it, I would suggest going around the whole jeep to check and tighten things up. I don't have the motivation to keep the Jeep. The reserve is low.
