Vehicle Detail
I bought this car in 2003 and have spent the last 8 years restoring it. I am the third owner but the second owner simply bought it from the widow of the original owner and then sold it to me. I have many of the items and receipts the original owner kept and were with the car when I obtained it. The car went from Connecticut to Florida to Georgia and finally to Texas, where it stayed in storage from 1985 until I bought it in 2003. The following is a summary of the restoration that has taken place: Engine: The engine as stripped to its bare block and dipped to completely clean it before it was reassembled. The block was bored and skimmed and the crankshaft and flywheel were ground. The crankshaft plugs were removed and the oilways were cleaned and new plugs were replaced and set. The crankshaft, flywheel, clutch and damper were all balanced together. The new pistons and connecting rods were balanced as well. New items include: BearingsSealsCore PlugsChainsGuidesTensionerPistonsPiston RingsHead StudsEngine Mounts and Gearbox MountsPilot bushingHead GasketBelt tensioner springConnecting rods were reconditioned and new small end bearings were pressedAll new seals and gaskets were installedTiming Cover was blasted and skimmed with block Cylinder Head: The cylinder head was magnafluxed to check for cracks then ground. New items include: ValvesValve GuidesValve Seats (Intake)BearingsValve SpringsTappet Guide Hold-DownsFreeze PlugsStudsGaskets and sealsChrome Nuts (head and cam covers)Washers (Chrome and copper)Some tappet shims (as needed)Valve Stem Seals NOTE: All machining was completed by mechanic trained by Jaguar and knowledgeable of the XK engine. Carburetors: Carburetors were rebuilt and detailed (proprietary cleaning and polishing) by Paltech Micorpolishing, LLC of Brunswick Ohio. This included a complete teardown and replacement of nearly all parts of each carburetor, which are then adjusted and tested before being returned. All new gaskets were installed for intake manifolds and new studs, nuts and lock washers were used. New throttle and accelerator springs were installed. The fuel pump was reconditioned and some plastic fuel lines were replaced, The gas tank was cleaned and sealed and a replacement sender was installed as were fuel filters in the tank and fuel filter assembly. New vent hoses were installed. Transmission: The transmission was stripped and new bearings (needle and ball) were installed, New Synchro Rings were installed. New clutch and throw-out bearing were installed as were all gaskets and seals. New master and slave cylinders were installed. New pedal springs were installed. New shift knob and shift kit were used. Exhaust: New studs, nuts and washers, gaskets and seals. New resonators and rear pipes from mufflers to resonators, New muffler and resonator hangers and hardware. Repairs were completed, as needed. Extra hard primer was applied and Jaguar formula paint from “Restoration Shop”. (TCP Global) was applied, finished and polished. All chrome was re-plated or replaced, except for window frames on doors and vent windows. Rubber was replaced in its entirety. Windshield (windscreen) and door glass was replaced . Undercoating was reapplied. Interior: Interior Kit from XKs Unlimited (Bassett Kit) was installed, including leather seats, all interior vinyl, all carpeting, underfelts and dashboard. This is an original material – correct replacement set. This kit includes the PVC trim around rear hatch opening. Also included, English door trim. The carpeting is correct for the Series II. The car starts, runs and drives excellently. It has about 1000 miles on the engine since it was restored. The car shifts beautifully and accelerates wonderfully. The car is still in the break-in phase and so hasn’t yet been used to its full extent. This car is one of four E-Types I have owned and it responds as well or better than any of the others and that includes one I bought new in 1970. The buyer will receive the original distributor, if he decides to reinstall it. The air conditioning and clock do not work (magnetic clutch on compressor does work). The only items that still need to be replaced are the wire wheels and hubcaps. The tires are nearly new, except for the spare. This is, of course, a matching number vehicle and comes with the Heritage Trust Certificate. An effort was made to use parts from XKs Unlimited, Terry’s Jaguar and SNG Barrett to insure the parts were as near to original replacement parts as possible. With this car you can just get in it and drive it with confidence, knowing almost everything has been repaired or replaced. If you have always wanted to own a unique part of automotive history, this is your chance. All the work has already been done for you.
