Vehicle Detail
Up for sale is my 1961 Impala Bubbletop. I am reluctantly selling this car only because I am out of garage space. This ’61 is definitely a project car, but because it’s complete, relatively unmolested, and runs and drives, it will be a great car to restore. The Impala has power steering, brakes, dual mirrors, and dual antennas. Other than the Powerglide, I think that rounds out the factory options. It comes with a pushbutton AM radio but an old Alpine cassette deck has been installed in the dash. The body and interior are the original white / turquoise colors although both have been redone once. I can find no evidence that the car has ever been in a major accident. The gaps are consistent and the doors close effortlessly, even with the car supported on jack stands. The body looks very straight but will need rust repair to be nice: inner and outer rockers, partial quarters, fender repair, and some isolated areas on the doors and hood. The center pan of the trunk floor should be replaced since the fur-like liner accelerated scaly rust in that area. The floorpans look to have been repaired years ago, but they should be done again. One of the body mounts near the rear axle needs to be repaired. I am no expert on ‘61s, but from the research I have done it looks like these are pretty common rust areas. The frame looks very good and straight. The interior is partially original (headliner, carpet, door panels, etc) but the seats have been redone in vinyl and velour. One window crank is missing, and the glove box liner is gone. In my opinion, much of the interior is usable. The drivetrain is the 235ci 6 cylinder and powerglide; the rear is 3.36 with an open differential. The car runs, drives, and stops but I’ve only driven it around the block a few times, not on highways or major streets. The trans shifts fine but, annoyingly, the Park detent won’t lock the car in place – could be a linkage adjustment or something internal. The 235 is stock except for a Fenton split exhaust manifold with true duals (mufflers need to be replaced – it’s loud). You should plan on going through the drivetrain, at least the basic tune-up stuff, and running through the wear items (front suspension, U-joints, etc) before driving this car regularly. I don’t want to mislead anyone into thinking it would be a good idea to drive this car home. What’s neat about this car is that all the bits and pieces are pretty well intact. Sure, the car has sat for years in a carport, and certainly needs a full resto, but it was never anyone’s beater, basket case, drag car, lowrider, or yard ornament. Plus, it’s got a great color combination and because it’s so complete you won’t have to go hunting too often for odds and ends. Or, better yet, do some of the metalwork, fix the exhaust, and cruise it around when the weather’s nice. Terms of sale: A $1000 non-refundable deposit is due within 72 hours of the auction's end via cash, cashier’s check or US Postal Service money orders. Full payment must be made with cash or cashier’s check within 7 days of the auction’s end, and the car must be picked up from its location in White Lake, MI within 14 days from the auction’s end. The Impala will not be released from my possession until all funds clear. The Impala is sold as-is, where-is, with no warranties expressed or implied. The car has a clean Michigan title in my name. Thanks for bidding!
