1996 Ford Taurus GL Great running car for someone in need of a reliable daily driver. This model has a 3.0-liter Vulcan V6, 145- horsepower pushrod engine which was extensively redesigned for quieter and smoother operation and better fuel economy. Driving the front wheels through a sophisticated four-speed electronically- controlled automatic transmission, the Vulcan provides enough power for any family-car application. The second-generation Taurus is both evolutionary and revolutionary. The styling is certainly very different, even revolutionary. Underneath and inside, the Taurus is still a Taurus, only better. It is a bit larger and more spacious. Nearly all parts were new or upgraded at the time. The increased length and width combined with the greater window area make for a larger interior that feels even more spacious. The velour-covered seats and instrument panel are similar to those of the previous generation, with detail improvements. The most notable interior improvement concerns the controls for the climate controls and sound systems. They are now placed together in an oval panel in the center of the dashboard. These important controls are now much easier to use. Also new and useful on this car which has a steering column-mounted shift lever is a multipurpose center console that can fold into a third front passenger seat. This car will accomodate six passengers. Rear seat passengers have plenty of room, and the rear bench seat folds down with a 60/40 split if long cargo items must be carried. Trunk access is much easier thanks to a lower liftover height. Given the fact that this car is over fifteen years old it is not perfect, mechanically it is in great shape. It does however have some mostly cosmetic issues. The paint has some flaws, such as expected dings and a some small dents here and there. There is a crack in the plastic light assembly (see pictures). The windshield wipers work but the washer does not dispense fluid. There is a small running light in the rear on the passenger side that is also not working. As to the interior, it looks like new but does have a few issues as well. The speedometer works, but the odometer stopped working about three months ago. I estimate the actual mileage at about 153000. It is missing the rear ashtray, and the covers of the interior lights located on the doors. The dash above the steering wheel has begun to separate and there is a small gap, It does not affect performance. The radio works with twelve programmable FM stations and six AM. The cassette deck does work, but it has eaten some of my tapes. AC works, the driver's seat is automated and does adjust quite well so that anyone can probably find a comfortable setting. The passenger seat is adjustable, only manually not electronically. This car was owned previously by my Mother in law, Grandmother in law, and Cousin in law. It has given us all plenty of reliable miles with very little needed maintenance, aside from the expected wearables such as tires, brakes and oil changes. I am not a mechanic but have done my best to accurately describe the car so that you may make an informed decision.
