Vehicle Detail
1986 Mercedes Benz 300SDL Turbo Diesel One owner, well maintained car with only 129k miles. Just serviced and well sorted. Please scroll down to view all photos and the complete description! Up for auction is one of the nicest Mercedes 300SDLs you'll find. It is in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition and ready for a long highway adventure! It has been well sorted out over the last few months by an engineer well experienced in restoring these cars to excellent running condition. This one owner car spent its life in rural New Jersey. It was meticulously maintained and driven sparingly, spending most of the time in the garage. In the spring, a senior quality engineer in the automotive industry, and Mercedes Benz collector (thats me), found the car for sale by the original owner, now an elderly gentlemen. It had seen regular, but occasional use, and was in unmolested, original condition. As you may know, there are certain common weak points in these cars which need some attention as the years pass by. Over the last few months, this car has been throughly gone over to ensure it is in excellent functional condition. The entire air conditioning system was rebuilt and works perfectly, even on the 100F days we experienced this summer. All climate control functions work correctly. Cruise control works perfectly. The original radio has been rebuilt with an auxiliary input for an iPod installed in the glove box. Original power antenna works well. The windows and sunroof work correctly. All instruments, including the clock, tachometer, and ambient temperature display work well. A new Mercedes Benz battery was installed. The front suspension, which is generally very expensive to repair, has been gone over. Several new Mercedes Benz original (not aftermaket) parts were installed and its now tight and completely quiet. Ride quality is exceptional, as it should be for a long-wheelbase S class! Tires are Pirelli P6 plus, new this year with only a few thousand miles. The engine runs excellent and does not consume any oil or coolant. Its very powerful with excellent throttle response (for a diesel, that is). All engine fluids have been flushed and changed, along with new filters. New belt installed. Transmission has been serviced and shifts excellent, with functioning kick-down. Cooling system was flushed and a new thermostat was installed. The engine never runs warm. Brakes are excellent. The floors, rocker panels, and jack points are all absolutely rust free. The paint is largely original and shows very nicely with only a few minor scratches and dings. Chrome is perfect. The interior is leather and is in excellent condition. There is no significant wear or scratches anywhere. The wood is very nice without sun fading. The rear hat shelf looks like new and has no fading. The original maintenance book has records of services over the years, but is not complete. The original owner didn't see the point in keeping all his records since he never planed on selling the car! I have personally driven this car over 5,000 miles since June and enjoyed every minute of it. I wouldn't hesitate to take it on a long road trip in any weather condition. Behind the wheel, you feel as if you're driving a car thats only a few years old. The steering wheel feels new in your hands, the engine is powerful, ride is excellent. Ride height in the rear is correct with no sagging. Sunroof works smoothly in both directions, and pops up. Two genuine Mercedes Benz keys are included with the car, along with original owners manual and documentation. Steering wheel feels as new with no wear at all! Driver's seat shows little or no wear. Correct Mercedes Benz original floor mats. Back seat is just as clean as the rest of the interior. Excellent oil pressure, even when hot. Engine never runs warm. The condition of these controls are consistent with the gentle use this car has seen throughout its life. Rebuilt Becker 754 by the good folks at Becker Auto Sound. Trunk. Original spare has never seen the road. The original tool kit is under the tire. VIN plate. The wheels are very clean. Valid NJ safety inspection from April 2010. The increasely rare original "Daimler Benz" version of this sticker. Engine compartment is clean and honest, never detailed. Now, a bit more about me: As I've mentioned before, I'm a quality engineer in the automotive industry. If you've used the radio or navigation system in a Mercedes E class or S class in the last 10 years or so, you've seen my work. Collecting and working on classic Mercedes is my hobby, not my business, but I've been at it for about 15 years now. I believe that original is the only way a car should be restored, and enjoy making great cars out of good cars. This is for sale to make room for more cars and more projects, wherever or whatever they may be! This car is often located in Teaneck, NJ, but will mostly likely be stored at my office in Fairfield, NJ during and after the auction. Please feel free to contact me at (973) 953-3418 to arrange an appointment to see and drive the car. I recommend an in-person inspection of the car, just to ensure we're all on the same page and there are no surprises. I'm happy to work with your shipper and welcome international buyers. Remember: This is a 25 year old car. While it is in excellent condition, please be realistic in your expectations. Truly perfect cars are very difficult, if not impossible to come by, and this is not one of them. Payment must be made in full within 7 days, unless arrangements are made prior to the end of the auction. Payment in person must be made in cash. Payment by mail should be a bank check and sent overnight. Car can not be picked up until funds clear. Car must be picked up within 21 days of the end of auction.
