Vehicle Detail

1921 Studebaker Series EG "Big Six" Dual-Cowl 7-Passenger Open Touring Car A rare and desirable antique Studebaker of the first order! The Big Six was on a different order a magnitude from the “standard” Special Six, both in size and strength. The impressively large Big Six cemented Studebaker’s early world-wide reputation for extreme durability and reliability in tough service. This particular model was the top-of-the-line dual-cowl coachwork on the longest wheelbase with folding jump seats. It has a tall and imposing stance that must have set it instantly apart from plebeian traffic of its day. Indeed, the Big Six presented stiff competition for other prestige automobiles in the US and abroad. This very well preserved example has been in careful storage since the early 1970s, at which time the owner stopped driving it and put it into storage until such time as he could do a true restoration. He made sure it was kept indoors, clean, high and dry. He had his employees occasionally check and make sure the crankcase was filled, and every few years added a few drops of penetrating oil through the priming cups on each cylinder, at the same time turning the motor to make sure it remained freed up. The owner passed away this year, the grand restoration never begun, and we are offering this special machine on auction for his heirs. Original detailing abounds, like the excellent original linoleum on the floor in the front cab, the clean clear gauge faces, some original leather on the rear seat back, original embossed vinyl on the door panels. The canvas top appears that it could be original, with all of the snaps and clips and detailing in place; its irons are excellent and the hinges all work without trouble. This car retains nearly every part and detail, right down the little leather pouches and etched glass courtesy lamp for rear seat occupants on the back of the second cowl. Neat period details include strong front and rear bumpers, large and lovely beveled wind-wings, and a beautiful Triplex aluminum red, white and green tail-lamp. “Restoration” on this car, performed sometime back in the 50s, appears to have been limited to a coat of paint, heavy-duty vinyl upholstery on the front seats and the rear seat bottom cushion, and some carpets. Everything else gives a stunningly original reference from which to commence a full restoration, or it could be got up-and-running as it looks now with its exquisite antique patina intact. An inspection and a sponge bath with soap and water is the extent of the prep work we have done on this machine, and we made no attempt to fire it up. It is truly as close as practically possible to the state in which it was parked about forty years ago. The engine looks just about complete in detail. It is still full of oil, and it still turns without undo friction. We couldn’t find the engine#, but the head has a part# of 32577. with a casting date of 7-10-20. After thorough evaluation of the whole machine, we think the 9983 miles on the odometer is perfectly legitimate. Structurally, the steel body is very straight, solid and strong, and was built from impressive gauges of real molybdenum steel. In our inspection, rust is limited to some small holes in the rear floor. Any wood we could see in the superstructure seems solid. The wood spoke wheels appear to our eyes to be in excellent shape. The original wooden frames and lattice beneath the seat cushions are still perfectly serviceable, and only an abject perfectionist would make new ones. This car exhibits the kind of preservation made possible only by determination and careful storage. It is in a different league from a “field car” or a car that sat in a leaky barn occupied by raccoons. The Big Six has been an esteemed classic almost from the time it was new. It has a special place in Studebaker lore. This LWB tourer is a near twin for the celebrated “Grandaddy” Big Six that completed over half-a-million miles of use, and was displayed far and wide by Studebaker for publicity purposes. It’s a model that has retained a strong reputation and desirability amongst knowledgeable collectors. Sitting in the driver's seat, it's easy to see why it's so well loved: Tall and imperious, with a gorgeous long hood and what feels like an acre of open passenger space behind, commanding the large and powerful six-banger would have made any automobilist feel like king of the road. Lucky passengers in the big soft rear sofa must have felt like potentates, with more than enough room to stretch, and that two-piece windshield so far ahead. But, the pictures here tell the story best. Enjoy them! Just to make it clear to everyone, this is a project car for a dedicated and knowledgeable enthusiast. It will have to be trailered away, preferably in enclosed transport. We expect that this lovely old Stude will find it’s market value here, and so we are letting the bidding rip with a very low opening price and NO RESERVE. High bid buys this next week! Good luck. Please ask any questions. We will answer quickly and honestly. We have many more photos if you would like to see something in particular. Personal inspections are welcome and encouraged! Thanks for looking. If you like this car, please also see our special Model A Rumble-Seat Roadster from the same estate, on another eBay auction! PS: Auction Winner will also receive an old automotive car trunk that was stored inside this car, even though there is no trunk deck on the back. It's a typical black vinyl-covered trunk of the period, used for touring, and made my Lorenz Trunk Co, Minneapolis. It looks good outside, but the plywood floor is rotted out...Use the skin and hardware and pattern new plywood to make an nice antique trunk! The Fine Print: GOOD LUCK! Please bid to the value this car may hold for you. Please feel free to ask questions or add comments. Please ask questions BEFORE you bid. We will respond quickly and honestly. This car is located in Plymouth, Minnesota 55441, about ten minutes west of downtown Minneapolis. Inspections are invited and encouraged!
