Bernardi "neo-classic" design reminiscent of the 1950' MG-TD. A professionally built sports car using all Ford running gear, with a 2.3- 4-cylinder engine and 4-speed transmission. Mustang II suspension and differential. This is a body-on frame replica with a fiberglass bodoy mounted on a factory box/steel frame. Not a VW bug frame and engine! The factory chassis is a custom ladder frame, with wall thickness of 5/16 inch steel. According the Popular Mechanics, which reviewed the car when introduced in 1982: "To say that the chassis is sturdy is an understatement..It looks like it was taken from a section of the Golden Gate Bridge.!" The factory body features a stronger form of fiberglass construction. Instead of a single layer of fiberlgass, the Bernardi body uses a composite sandwich consisting of one layer of fiberglass, one of stiff plaastic foam, and finally a second layer of fiberglass. The result - a much heavier, stronger body, generally found in race cars. The "kit" comes with attached fuel and brake plumbing, wiring bundle, doors, windshield, hood and trunk lid installed prior to shipping. The frame is pre-drilled for precision mounting. This car is a blast to drive; we've been driving it all summer, but just bought a 1930 Durant Coupe, and that's going to take precedent over the Bernardi. The engine is stock except for a Weber carburetor. While I would prefer more power - it's fun and easy to drive, dependable, excellent tires on chrome wire wheels and excellent interior.
