HISTORY OF THE WOODIE Mention the word Woodie (Woody) and most people will instantly visualize endless summers, surfboards and bikini-clad surfer girls while Beach Boys tunes echo in their minds. The Woodie Wagon (regardless of year, make or model) holds a special place in the heart of Americana. Woodie fans all have their favorites, but in the end, it's all about the wood - and the more of it, the better. Wood evokes warmth. Warmth means summer. Summer means beaches. Beaches mean surf and surfers and surfer girls (at least to those who grew up in the 50's and 60's). And all of the above is enough to set one to daydreaming and visualizing themselves behind the wheel of a classic like this '41 Ford Beauty. Not even the Beach Boys had a ride this sweet. Dating back in design to the 1800s, the Woodie automobile was a carryover from the days of wooden wagons. The early wooden autos emerged from an age where wood was the material of choice, used in all horse drawn carriages, and even in the framing and bodywork of early automobiles. As all-metal construction became more economical, wooden construction became an object of prestige. Hand craftsmanship became an exception, where it had once been the rule, and the Woodie, as we know it was born. Woodies were the first “Station Wagons”, and for those of you who don't know where that term came from, it goes back to the days when almost everyone traveled by train, if they traveled at all. Cars of the time were specially modified (at first individually by their owners, and later by the makers), to carry passengers and luggage to and from the train stations and their homes. The term stuck and has been used ever since to denote cars with extra space for passengers and luggage. Of course, to accommodate the extra interior space, you need a larger body, and in the early days metal was more expensive than wood as a manufacturing material. Until the late 30's and early 40's most all cars and trucks used wood in body construction (some more, some less). Even when you couldn't see it, the wood was there, adding strength and rigidity to the body. In the case of early wagons, it was decided to save money and make the bulk of the body out of wood and to let it all show. Besides, there were a lot of out-of-work, horse-drawn carriage makers that needed employment and knew how to apply their skills to the horseless versions. Since woodies were work vehicles made for short hauls, many early models did not come with glass windows because they were not considered worth the expense. As we know, Henry Ford came up with quite a few innovations that revolutionized auto manufacturing. He was always looking for ways to cut manufacturing costs in order to stay ahead of the competition. In 1929 he opened a lumber mill in Iron Mountain, Michigan, and began milling the wood used in the construction of Ford bodies. He broke further ground by being the first manufacturer to offer Woodie bodies as a regular catalog item for buyers to choose from. By the late 30's he was not only processing the wood, but also making his own bodies (the only manufacturer ever to do so). By the late 30's, wooden construction costs surpassed that of metal construction and the old Station Wagon went from being a work vehicle to a toy for the rich, or vehicle for sportsmen (grandpa's SUV), a status symbol. They went from being called "station wagons" and "depot hacks" to "Estate Wagons", and began receiving things like glass windows, heaters and other amenities. After the war, GI's returning home to start families recognized the utilitarian value of these vehicles and began snapping them up, which prompted auto makers to make the station wagon the family car of choice for the next several decades. THE 1941 WOODIE Very significant changes that were made to the 1941 Fords had a big impact on the station wagon models. The Ford design team headed by E.T. Gregorie undertook a complete redesign, not only of Ford but also its two-year-old sister car, Mercury. Gone was the “pointed prow” look that had characterized Edsel Ford’s thinking and Gregorie’s drawings since the mid-1930s. “We had so much of that pointy effect…that we decided to pursue a fresh-looking effect – a fuller, rounder, more bloated and horizontal effect,” he later recalled for historian Henry Dominguez. “I sold Mr. Ford on the horizontal effect.” He did so with good reason: all manufacturers were “going horizontal” by 1941, and keeping the status quo would have left Ford looking antiquated. The wheelbase of the Ford was increased two inches, to 114. Body designs were made smoother, with higher fender lines. To blend with the new cowl and fender shapes, the station wagon bodies had to be modified. This meant a new roofline and body contours. The doors were flared out at the bottom to partially cover the running board, and vent windows were added to the front doors. Bodies were framed in maple, with panels of either birch or gumwood. There were still two series of wagons, but “series inflation” had crept into their names. What had been Standard and Deluxe became Deluxe and Super Deluxe, respectively. The entry-level Ford had become a new low-priced Special series, not offered as a station wagon. THIS WILL HELP YOU RECOGNIZE WHAT A GREAT BARGAIN THIS WOODIE IS: http://www.rmauctions.com/auctionresults.cfm?SaleCode=NA09 THE 1941 FORD WOODIE (LOT 123) SOLD FOR $126,500! Vehicle Condition: THIS 1941 FORD WOODIE HAS BEEN LOVINGLY CARED FOR SINCE NEW. THIS IS A VEHICLE THAT ANYONE WOULD BE PROUD TO OWN, AND THIS WOODIE IS WONDERFUL TO DRIVE. SHE IS IN EXCELLENT MECHANICAL AND COSMETIC CONDITION, AND IS SURE TO ATTRACT AN ADMIRING CROWD EVERYWHERE YOU GO! This Woodie is now 70 years old, so some signs of age are to be expected! The paint is in overall good condition with a good shine, but does have some touchups and surface scratches here and there. One panel does not exactly match. There are a few very minor small indentations that can easily be removed by a paintless dent remover for about $200. There is some age showing to the grille work and I would have it rechromed. The wood and other chrome is in excellent condition. The padded top had one cut several inches long, but it has been repaired, is waterproof, and you would need to be very, very tall to see it. This woody is solid structurally with no rust damage to the frame or major components. Prior to the time it was restored there was some rust damage to the floor pan and some thin insignificant metal pieces under the car. The rust was treated and stopped, and is not active, but some signs of missing metal are visible from under the car. The tires have excellent tread, but appear to be older. The clock is not currently working, but this is commonplace and should be an easy repair. The upholstery was replaced and the leather is in excellent condition. The interior wood is breathtaking! The engine compartment is very clean and tidy. Note that the mileage listed above is believed to be the total original mileage for this vehicle! Terms of Sale: BIDS ARE BINDING.
