Vehicle Detail

You are bidding on a 1988 Alfa Romeo Milano Verde the high performance version of the Milano line. Approximately 3000 built with only around 900 imported to the USA. Destined for collector status (by magazine critics) being the last of the De Dion rear wheel drive Alfas plus its rarity. These cars sold for around $30k new in 1988 as Alfa Romeo’s flagship model. Their performance was such that many police departments throughout Europe used them. Here is a fine example of this legendary car now for sale. I bought this car in 2008 with 100,750 miles on it as the third owner. According to Carfax the car was bought in southern California where it spent most of its life, the person I bought it from owned it less than 2 years when it broke the timing belt tensioner and bent a couple of valves. I bought the car at this point with intent to restore and personalize it. It already had some goodies installed from the first owner such as Koni shocks, Stainless braided brake hoses and the camshafts from the 164S. The under side is flawless and rust free. There is no sign of abuse or even hard driving. I pulled the engine for rebuilding and had the interior redone as close to o.e. as possible since the original cloth is n.a.. The match is incredibly close and as an added detail I had “Recaro” stitched onto the rear seat backs as well (Alfa did not do this originally) The carpets are in great shape but the head liner needed to be done and so it was. I did the head liner in light gray to match the seat inserts and door panels to brighten the interior, it really worked well. Originally the head liners are black but now its brighter and it feels much larger inside, nice touch. I installed $2500 worth of stereo equipment as well, 6 speakers, 2 Alpine amps, PDX-2.150 2ch. for the pair of 6.5” JL Audio subs and PDX-2.150 4 ch for the 4 Italian made, award winning Hertz 6.5” speakers w/cross overs. I also installed a Farad capacitor as well with an Alpine CDA-105 head. The system sounds great, the installation took me a week due to the very limited space available in these cars. As the photos show I used the limited spacing smartly mounting one amp in the rear deck glove box. All the speakers were mounted in the factory spots and wires were pulled through the original routing into the doors. The two 6.5 JL Audio woofers were mounted in the rear door kick panels. It is a very clean and professional installation using the best wire and hardware available. Everything on the dash works great even the A.R.C. lights work correctly as well as the sunroof and all windows and switches including both power mirrors, a/c (F.Y.A.O.) and rear window defroster. The head lights are Carillo H4 with 80/100 bulbs and have the 1057 park light bulbs inside as seen in the photos. A European grille and side marker lamps have also been added with ram air intake directly to the air box housing a K&N filter. The window tint is ceramic film, the best available and carries a life time warranty nation wide, it is the legal limit. Mechanically, the cruise control is not working nor is the ABS but the brakes are awesome and work stellar. I cross drilled the front brake rotors and installed EBC green Kevlar pads. It stops far better than stock now with less brake dust on the wheels. The brake pedal is right at the top and firm even though the antilock isn’t working this cars braking is exceptional. I replaced the front tie rod ends and welded in front sway bar support brackets where they are known to crack even though there were no signs of cracking. In fact, this car was never driven hard looking at the under side and drive train. I also replaced all the drive line rubber couplers, center support bearing and all three motor mounts needed or not it got them since I was pulling the engine out anyway. The trans shifts like new, nice and tight. Now for the engine; I got this car with the intent of never selling it so I put my heart, soul into it. Primarily I am a “custom” engine builder and developer of performance products by trade, I pulled no punches in building this motor. Hours of hand porting intake work went into this one starting with custom made 40mm i.d. V-stacks that were welded into the plenum chamber then match ported to the runners all the way down and through the intake ports. Custom made Stainless Steel valves with 6mm stem diameters compared to the 9mm stem diameter of the original vale stems. The valve heads are stock sized but shaped better for flow. Increasing the head diameters would have robbed from the low end power which is why it wasn’t considered. This mod is huge in cylinder head flow and raises the rpm ceiling substantially due to the valves being much lighter, (30%) Custom guides, and retainers had to be made as well. The new valve springs are very high quality as well, I doubt there are better prepared 3.0 heads anywhere. The connecting rods were polished, resized and shot peened. The flywheel was lightened and crank throws knife edged with the whole assembly balanced. Total Seal “gapless” rings where installed in place of the o.e. rings. The compression ratio is 10.5:1 it runs great on premium without pinging or running warm in fact I have never scene the temp go beyond 165 degrees. The exhaust manifolds were ported and opened up at the down pipe connection where they had some restriction and inconsistency. I built a custom exhaust from there back as well. The two down pipes meet into a hand made merge collector that cones up to 2.5” then slips into a short resonator. From there I used oval tubing for ground clearance just as the factory did but retained the 2.5 diameter. I modified the oval tubing to angle up towards the rear axle with a smooth radius bend then returning to round tubing before entering the huge but very quiet 2.5” rear muffler. A ton of work went into this exhaust system, I also do this kind of work for a living on both cars and sport-bikes which can be seen along with the motor on the motocancelli.net website. The end result, the car pulls incredibly strong clear up to the rev limiter which is now at 6400 rpm. This car makes well over 180 HP at the rear wheels and 220 HP at the crank. It will pull clear to 6400 rpm in 5th gear which should easily clear 145 mph and is as smooth as silk. If I built this motor for a customer it would be well north of the $10k mark. I have not completed this project yet but it is close with just the cruise control and antilock brakes needing attention with some minor body work on some door dings and other little scuffs that any 25 year old car would have. The car has just over 17,000 mies on the new engine and I just installed new Yokohama AD08 tires and It is killing me to sell her but uncontrolled circumstances are the cause for it.MANY, MANY more pictures available upon request. Including internal engine components and work as it was being built.
