In 1967, its first full year of production, the Jaguar 420/ Daimler Sovereign easily outsold the other Jaguar saloon models still in production. Relatively few were made in total due to the fact that the Coventry factory stopped making the Jaguar 420 in 1968, just over two years after production began and with just 10,236 produced.
The 420 was sold as a compact sporting saloon filling a perceived gap between the Jaguar’s Mk2 and MkX and sharing features of both.
This new saloon combined the 4.2-litre powerplant of the MkX and E-Type
with the compact body and independent rear suspension of the S-Type. It
featured the squared-off nose with four headlamps akin to that of the MkX.
The 4.2 litre XK engine of the 420 was fitted with the straight port cylinder head, two carburetors and 3/8-inch lift cams.
Our 1967 420 is running and has a little over 100,000 miles.
It has an automatic transmission, knock-off wire wheels and air conditioning.
Even the toolkit is in place. The interior of the car is in nice condition
(seats, wood trim).
The car looks great from ten feet but here is what is required to take it to the next level:
- The rubber seals around the doors need replacement
(gaskets and cement included with car) - The paint is cracked on the fender above the light
- The rear tires were mounted with the whitewall facing
out, the front is black sidewall facing out - There are small holes above the front bumper from
some missing trim - The bumper on the driver’s side supported by wire,
passenger side needs anchor nut. - The radio antenna is not mounted.
- There is surface rust on the underbody but no rust
through or perforations
This car has not been driven in two years with the exception of repositioning on our lot. We do not recommend driving the vehicle prior to performing a full mechanical inspection.
