Our sporty black 1970 Ford Torino GT fastback has only 85,801 original miles.
In 1970 the Ford Torino featured a completely new body style with all new looks and style. This lower, wider, and longer Torino has graceful, aerodynamic lines. This year saw the introduction of the 429 Cobra Jet engine in the Torino as an option. The 429 Cobra Jet was rated at a whopping 360 horsepower right out of the showroom. Our car has had the original 302 HP engine replaced with a 429 Cobra Jet. This engine has less than 25,000 miles on it
The car has an automatic transmission with a T handle, B&M ratchet-action performance shifter and the rear has 4.11 gears. The Firehawk Indy 500 tires are mounted on aftermarket Centerline wheels.
The paint could use some attention and the body has some bad spots. See the photos for details. The floor pans have been replaced but there is some rust under the paint at the bottom of the both front fenders and doors. The tent the car was being shown in collapsed and minor damage occurred. The passenger front fender is dimpled, the mirror knocked off, antenna bent and a minor paint scrape on the hood.
The carburator is currently leaking and will require a gasket.
The interior is in nice shape with a dash pad (slightly puckered) and red /black racing seats with harness and a Grant GT steering wheel. The dashboard features a linear style speedometer centered on the driver. A temperature gauge was the only available gauge. The oil pressure and electrics are monitored with warning lights. Our car has aftermarket gauges for water temperature, oil pressure, vacuum, amps and tachometer. The heater fan, radio and stock temperature gauge are not working. This Sports Roof model features the "DirectAire" ventilation system that was a standard feature and eliminates the need for side vent windows
Our Torino GT has the reflective body side decal called "laser stripes". These attractive stripes fade in multiple colors while being light reflecting. These were optional equipment on Torino GT. The GT comes standard with non-functional hood scoop molded into the hood, GT emblems (including the center of the grille), dual color-keyed sport mirrors and full width tail lights with a honeycomb effect (the centre portion is non-functional but reflective). Our car has a body colored trunk mounted spoiler.
Motor Trend magazine tested a 1970 Torino GT Sports Roof with a 429 CJ, C-6 Automatic, and 3.50:1 gears, and obtained a 0 - 60 mph time of 6.0 seconds, while the quarter mile took 14.4 seconds at 100.2 mph.
Overall, 1970 was a very successful year for the Torino. It was a well received car by the automotive press.
