Vehicle Detail
2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser - Mechanics Special 209,000 Needs Trailered, Dollied or Towed I have a clear Ohio title in hand. This is a one-owner and in pretty good shape for the age and the mileage. I am selling this car because it has too many miles and too many factory parts for me to rely on it daily, it gets poor gas mileage, and the last time I did the water pump, I swore I would not do that again. I bought this car new from Byers Chrysler Plymouth in downtown Columbus Ohio in Jan 2001. Its been my daily driver for 10+ years, and while I've been fair to it, 209,000 miles and ten years tends to wear a car down. I had a single minor accident that involved replacing the rear bumper cover and right rear quarter panel, other than that accident free. There is some rust at the bottom of the left rear door that's looking serious, but other than that door, there's only the occasional modest surface rust as far a I'm aware. The front end of the car has about one million chips in the paint on bumper cover, fenders, and hood. There are several door dings in the doors, a chip in the windshield, and a few significant dings and scratches in other areas. I added a rear spoiler (sits under the rear window on the hatch), and traded the factory steel wheels for factory 16inch silver painted alloys, which have a couple of rim dings but are straight and round and ride fine when balanced. I bought this as a base PT - no options at all. The car does have working A/C, and all 4 power windows work, Emergency Brake recall has not been done (and you've got to leave it in gear because the brake WILL release by itself about 1% of the time you park on an incline). The heater/defrost fan does not work in the #2 position, but works in #1, #3 and #4 positions (I used to drive with it on #2 all the time). All dash lights and interior lights work. Just replaced the third brake light bulbs. Factory exhaust with a single patch welded in and no leaks right now. Had struts and shocks replaced last year. The car is dirty inside, the driver's seat is very worn, but the rest of the interior is in good shape. The headliner is dirty especially on the passenger side as I tend to drive with the passenger windows both open about an inch, but this appears to vacuum out. I am a non-smoker. All power windows work. The driver's door thinks its open and the dome light and door light stay on constantly. The driver's door hinge is very worn and might need replaced although it opens and closes fine. The back glass has two lines on the defroster grid that are open (not working). None of the glass is tinted, but its all there. The car was using about 1 quart of oil every 1,200 miles. Lifter noise is significant (has been for a very long time) although the engine always started easy and ran strong. I believe the valve guide seals are leaky as I smell strong odor of oil when I restarted the engine after shutting it off for a short period. I know the rings are worn. I just recently removed the Catalytic Converter guts (it was plugged), replaced the EGR Valve (it was blown due to plugged CAT), and after that the water pump to engine block seal is leaking again -- leaking so bad that when the engine gets up to temp it looks like someone left a faucet on under the hood. The car starts and runs fine, but its NOT DRIVEABLE in its present condition and so the winning bidder will need to trailer, tow dolly or tow this car to their workshop (or chop-shop). I will not sign the title over to anyone who does not have a way to pick this up without driving it. This might be better as a parts car, because after fixing (or more likely replacing) the engine, Other work that I know needs done are: 1) Steering Rack replaced or rebuilt, 2) lower ball joints left and right, 3) two new tires, 4) O2 Sensors replaced, 5) CAT replaced, 6) Lower front engine brace, 7) Rear crosslink replaced. The car still has the factory clutch and throw-out bearing, master/slave clutch cylinders, master brake cylinder, front calipers / rear brake cylinders and drums, power steering pump, alternator. All those items seem to work fine although the power steering pump is leaking a little. 8) Needs two tires. I believe it has the coveted Getrag 5 speed manual transmission which is desirable for high horsepower applications. If someone will tell me how I'll check that if anyone is interested in confirmation. It has not been serviced so it has the factory oil installed and still works well with no issues. Car is available for inspection by appointment. Contact me and I'll respond promptly. While it does start and drive any test drives will be limited to my driveway. Pick'N'Pull is offering me $675 for it, so I've set the first bid there. Thanks for looking. More interior pics after vacuuming the interior are here: click this link. The driver's seat is pretty much toast as the left side bolster has disintegrated. The carpet left front is dirty, and I'm not sure how well it will clean. I do have the original custom mats, and they all look pretty good except for the Driver's front. I also have the window sticker and owner's manual, as well as a Haynes Automotive Repair Manual that will go with the car. I kept a sweatshirt over the back of the driver's seat to keep it from wearing too much, and had floor mats over the factory floor mats to keep them looking good. The factory radio quit on me quite a while ago, and the current radio is a cheap unit but its using the factory wiring harness. At least one front speaker is blown. The fog/driving lights do not work (they're not factory anyway). Has a K&N air filter installed. That $200 is refundable ONLY IF YOU FIND THIS LISTING INACCURATE. The balance is required within 7 days of close, but I can store the car for up to 30 days after close of auction more or less as you arrange transport for the car.
