Vehicle Detail

Barn Fresh! This is a 1979 VW Westfalia Camper. It is an ultra rare automatic transmission (an actual automatic with a torque converter, etc. NOT the semi-automatic from earlier years). I made a short video of this bus, it can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZlZSXZQuSc It has been sitting for quite some time which costmetically set it back a few years. It has some of the typical rust that most VW buses get but it's not as bad as most I've seen. The worst areas are under the windshield, a couple of corners of the side windows, and a few corners of the body where water can be trapped by debris. The floors and frame are rock solid. All of the doors are nice and most of what it has is surface rust and very easy to repair. The windshield area would be the biggest challenge of all of it. The pop up top is in great condition. I'll break down the camper as follows: Exterior Appears to have all original paint with no previous accident damage. The sliding door needs a little work, it likes to come off of the track, I think the rear hinge needs a new bearing. The windshield is cracked, all other glass is in good condition. It has brand new tires and hubcaps. Both low beam headlights are burned out. It needs new rear lenses for the lights and one marker light lense. The door lock cylinders are missing. It has some dings and bruises and the aforementioned rust issues, all very typical of these vehicles at this age. Interior it appears that all of the Westy gear is there. This model doesn't have a table or a stove. it has a sink, power inverter, lower z bed, upper bunk and the standard cabinets. The cabinets need a little cosmetic work to be perfect. The condition of the water pump, power inverter is unknown but it's all there and intact. The drivers seat has been replaced with a Vanagon seat, the drivers door panel is missing, the passenger seat swivels. All curtains are there and in good conition, even the curtain that goes around the two front doors and windshield. The radio is missing and some of the defrost controls don't seem to work correctly. Dash lights work, gas gauge doesn't work. Horn works and it has a nifty steering wheel knob. The upper canvas is in good condition overall with only one hole about the size of a lemon at the rear corner. The green plaid upholstery on the upper and lower beds and passenger seat is pretty good. Mechanically The original Fuel Injection is long gone, replaced by a Weber Progressive carb and a stainless steel intake. The engine runs great, it may have an exhaust leak that's pretty minor. It fires right up and idles, the more I drive it, the better it runs. I installed a new battery, new tires and new hubcaps. I also drained the gas tank and put 5 gallons of fresh gas in it. The ultra rare automatic is flawless and shifts perfectly. I see no leaks of any kind. The brakes are in good condition, it stops, drives, steers and handles very well. Overall If you want a Westy project that's worth the effort to make perfect, this is it. It's one of the coolest vehicles I've ever discovered and I had no idea they were made with an automatic transmission. I also think this is an original California model. I am offering this at no reserve, highest bidder gets it. These are becoming harder to find at a reasonable price. I've seen them selling for as much as $13,000. You could own this one at a fraction of that and make it your own and update it. If you have any questions, you may reach me directly at 941-720-0300, my name is Jason and I'm a devoted car lover. This vehicle is one that if I had the time, it would remain in my possession, be fixed up to it's former glory, and return to the campground circuit. I expect full payment within 5 days, I can store it as long as you need me to. I can also deliver it anywhere in the southeast for $1.00 per mile. Otherwise, I'd be happy to cooperate for shipping arrangements. On Jul-24-11 at 10:17:48 PDT, seller added the following information: Just an update to answer some questions some had. The spare tire, jack and lug wrench are all there. I have a couple of boxes of parts to go with it, some Westy stuff and some VW stuff like dome lights, mirrors for the sides, etc. I drove the bus again yesterday to take my young daughters for a ride up and down the street. It drives very smooth rides smooth, has plenty of power and the brakes work great. All of my neighbors came out and drooled over the Westy. The engine fires right up without even touching the gas!
