Vehicle Detail

1973 Alfa Romeo GTV 2-Liter Series 115 This in an eye-popping Series 115 Bertone Coupe with SPICA fuel-injected 2-liter engine. A meticulous mechanical and cosmetic restoration of an original low-mileage GTV. It has been driven only sparingly in the years since completion, and will acquit itself admirably at any Alfa gathering eastward of a Pebble Beach concours. (But it also comes with a set of excellent original Campagnolo-style “turbina” magnesium wheels for the concours!) A high-quality, bare-metal re-spray in correct Alfa ‘dutch blue’ is the first striking highlight that impresses. Opening a door reveals a fully re-trimmed interior, including the carpets in the cabin and trunk, and new upholstery on all the seating area. It’s all clean, virtually unmarked, and well-fitted. The instruments are clean, clear and are working properly, as is all the switchgear except for the horn. A real surprise is the blower fan that works powerfully and almost silently, every time it’s switched on. The correct vinyl and wood-trimmed dashboard is excellent; it is NOT capped by one of those cheater glue-on “repair” panels, it is an excellent original item. The wooden-rimmed steering wheel is in new condition; perfect to look at and to hold. This is a superb place in which to conduct the business of Driving! Offsetting the paint is clean, excellent stainless steel trim, nearly flawless, right down to the new rubber bumper pads. The windshield is new, and the clean, clear, unscratched glass all around makes a beautiful exclamation point for this car’s overall allure. Getting down on our knees for a look at structural details finds perfectly shaped and clean wheel arches, with no rust or filler. Valance panels, front and rear, are straight and exquisite. All of the usual rust areas are solid, clean and strong: Leading contours of the floors, all jacking points, inside fender crevices, and the spare wheel well (inside & out). The super-critical windshield posts and areas around the cowl, backlight and other glass are all pristine. While there small isolated incidences of surface oxidation to be found underneath, this car can truly be described as rust free by any reasonable definition. Also underneath, it’s easy to see the unscraped sump-guard securely mounted over the oil pan (which itself has no broken fins), and the brand new ANSA exhaust from the stock header pipes back through the twin tail-pipes. An extra cast iron 2-piece header original standard style) goes with the car. Under the hood, everything looks clean and stock, right down to the correct SPICA airbox. The motor had a top-end rebuild fewer than 3000 miles ago. This car was tuned and maintained by Alfa –exclusive professionals, and it is set-up right: Warm idle is a rock-solid 700 RPM, with strong oil pressure. Throttle response is excellent. A well-tuned SPICA-injected Alfa is a very impressive thing, with clean, smooth characteristics and power delivery that is quite more refined than Webers or Dellortos can offer. The SPICA is truly one of the unique charms of the 115-Series cars, and this one works: Easy starting, no rough spots, and no dark smoke issued from the tail-pipes (see & hear it run on You Tube; search “SchramGTV”!). There is a new battery and electronic ignition, just to finish it off the powerplant. On the road, this GTV is tight, stable and nimble (as befits the breed). The steering has no slop, and the car stops straight and true, even with hands off the wheel. The new, red coil springs appear to be by “Autosprint” (from I.A.P.). These springs are typically slightly lower and firmer than stock. They improve the steering response, yet keep the ride comfortable; they seem impressively matched to the 215/60 x 14” Pirellis on gorgeous French Ronal alloys. Both the tires and wheels appear new. The transmission was rebuilt just a few thousand miles ago, and we detected no faults in its performance, even making a clean shift into first gear at 12mph (after a double-de-clutch and throttle blip, of course!) An extra, spare transmission is provided with the car. The low-mileage on the odometer is accurate, supported by two thick files of receipts, records and history. One interesting feature of the 1973 model is the larger gas tank, provided only for ’73. For the ’74 models they went back to the smaller tank (for reasons known only to Alfa Romeo!), making the “big tanks” quite sought after. Flaws in this Alfa are few, simple, and easily rectifiable: There is a very shallow depression and paint break about 2 inches long, on the trunk lid just below the badge (left by an over-exuberant palm slamming the trunk too hard!). One of the driving lamps in the grille does not light. The sound system (Blaupunkt Munster radio, with Blaupunkt “Blue Magic” speakers and power antenna) does not work (…Since this equipment was all new, this could be just incomplete wiring, but we didn’t have time to investigate). One interior knob on a rear “flipper” window is missing. Some of the weatherstrip at the doors and trunk is less than perfect. As previously mentioned, the horn is not feeling horny lately. That’s about it! We have thirty years direct experience with Alfa Romeos of every stripe; We know‘em, we love ’em. We have assessed this car as carefully and critically as any other, and we are extremely impressed with it from top to bottom. It is an outstanding example of the penultimate development of the Alfa Romeo Bertone coupe. It can draw its lineage directly to the early 1950s 750-Series Giuliettas, and retains the feel and brio of the earlier cars along with the worthwhile advances in technology, reliability, speed and comfort of the final run of 2-liter injected cars. These were offered for only two model years, and are in perpetual demand by discerning collectors. We have known personally, for approximately twenty years, the car’s present owner (who has driven it around 2000 careful miles in his several years ownership), and also the previous owner (who coordinated the no-corners-cut restoration)…Both of these gentleman have been careful and caring custodians to this car. Neither of them is an abusive or lead-footed “pilota”. In, short, this car is a keeper for a passionate Alfa fanatic: NO DISAPPOINTMENTS…I wouldn’t hesitate to drive it across the country tomorrow (in fact, I’d LOVE to!) This CAR is PRICED to SELL! The opening bid represents a value well below 'market price'. There is NO HIDDEN RESERVE -- HIGH BID BUYS THIS CAR NEXT WEEK! The Fine Print: GOOD LUCK!
