Vehicle Detail
You are viewing a pristine 100% original 77k actual mile 1983 240D that is becoming virtually impossible to find. This beautiful sample had one owner for more than 20 years and has been in a collector's possession ever since. It was owned by an elderly retiree and kept inside a garage day and night being carefully maintained since new by the local Mercedes Benz dealership until I purchased the car in 2007. As I am a avid collector of mint low-mileage German autos, I'll do my best to describe the condition as precisely as possible. As an overview, this car looks, runs, feels and drives exactly like one would expect a garaged and well maintained low mileage 240D should. Being a collector I have massaged and maintained this car to the highest level during my four year ownership. These cars are well known to last many hundreds of thousands of miles with proper maintenance. The 1983 model is the last year for the venerable 240D series and, as such, all of the refinements Mercedes made over the years are incorporated into this model. This particular sample is finished in the most sought after light ivory (tan) over the classic palamino beige interior. It comes equipped with the most desired 4-speed manual transmission, sliding steel sunroof, air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, dual power mirrors, cruise control and the original AM/FM Becker cassette stereo. MECHANICAL: All mechanical components on the car are completely original except for normal wear items (brakes, battery etc...). Having been maintained at least every 5k miles by a Mercedes dealership since new, the mechanical condition is simply superb. The original 2.4L engine exhibits zero wear with perfect compression (over 400 lbs.) in each cylinder. Between my regular 2,000 mile oil changes it does not use a single drop of oil. It starts instantly running quietly with virtually no smoke. I always use a diesel fuel conditioner to ensure that no fuel system damage occurs from the ultra low sulfer fuels in current use. The original fuel injection system functions perfectly with no leaks. The transmission shifts smoothly through the gears and the original clutch is tight and smooth. The 4-wheel disc brakes are powerful providing quick, straight stopping. The suspension is tight and supple with no clunks, squeaks or other noises. The steering is tight and precise. The air conditioning system has all of the original components and functions perfectly with no freon leaks. It has NOT been converted to the inferior R134A and uses the proper R12 freon for this vintage. There are no leaks of any type of fluids. All power equipment functions perfectly with the exception being the power radio antenna which needs replacing. I have a new one in the box but have not yet installed. The vacuum system (for power locks, etc...) works perfectly with no leaks. The cruise control holds a very steady speed. The car even has a Mercedes Benz factory battery installed shortly prior to my purchase in 2007. As you can see from the pictures, the engine bay is very correct and quite tidy. It has never been detailed so it shows some normal light grime from 77k miles of driving. During my ownership I have completed the following service items: Four new Bridgestone Turanza tires, transmission oil change, rear differential oil change, coolant flush, brake fluid flush, fuel filters, air filter, valve adjustment, new valve cover gasket, new clutch master and slave cylinders (clutch is original), new fuel return hoses. I only use 100% German parts on my classic cars. EXTERIOR: Having been stored indoors it's entire life the factory ivory white paint (DB-623) retains virtually of it's exceptional luster. The paint, chrome and rubber window/bumper seals are all in simply stunning condition as evidence to it's minimal exposure to the elements. There are no door dings present. The paint exhibits only very minor normal wear from 77k miles of careful driving. A small number of tiny stone chips on the leading edge of the hood have been touched up with the correct MB touch up paint. The car has never been in an any accidents, and all of the paint is factory original with one exception; In the 1980s the original owner scraped the paint on the lower right rear quarter panel and rear door on a boat trailer tongue while backing out of the driveway. It did not dent the panels but scraped the paint. The lower area of the rear quarter panel and RR door were repainted only below the chrome door edge protection strip. It was clearly painted using the proper lacquer paint with an excellent color match. In this small area which was repaired there are a few places where some cracking of the lacquer finish has occured, but it is not very noticeable. I'm the only one who has ever detected it. The car has no rust anywhere. Even the common rust areas under the doors and in the wheel well openings are completely free of any current or prior rust. The underbody is very clean and dry with 100% original exhaust parts in perfect shape. Only the minor surface corrosion which often occurs within months from new is on some of the suspension members. It could be detailed easily. INTERIOR: In a word the interior is simply stunning. UV rays damage every part of a car's interior when left outside. Being occuped by one eldery non-smoker and always kept indoors the interior looks just about new anywhere you look. The dash has absolutely no cracks, not even the tiny ones that form near the defrost vents or speakers. All of the materials have the same vibrant color as when new. The headliner, seats, door panels, dash and carpet exhibit virtually no wear or aging in their appearance. The seats are firm and supportive and display none of the typical sagging that plagues many older MB cars. All of the switchgear feels new to the touch. All dash lights work properly. The enormous factory sunroof opens/closes with smooth precision. The power windows perform flawlessly. There are no odors as the car was never smoked in or occupied by pets or children. The seats are MB TEX which is of course some of the most durable upholstery ever made. The first aid kit is present and has never been opened. The only minor flaws to mention are a tiny chip from the edge of the center console wood veneer about the size of a pencil tip. Also, the clutch master cylinder was replaced after some minor leakage which discolored a small area of the drivers side carpet. This is not seen since the factory floor mats are in place. The carpet in the car has zero wear as it has always had protective floor mats in place. The trunk area simply looks new with the appearance of never being used. The spare is an original Dunlop tire but was used at some point. The jack and tools are in perfect condition. I do have all of the factory manuals, service books, two factory keys and an extensive service history. The factory maintenance book was dealer stamped (Leitzinger Mercedes Benz in PA) from 1k miles to 61k miles. I have complete records of service from 61k miles to present as well. Honestly very little has been done to this car outside of very careful regular maintenace. During my 7,000 miles of ownership, the car has averaged 28 mpg in 100% city driving. These cars normally deliver in the low to mid 30s mpg on the highway.
