The Avanti II Models were made by the new Avanti Motor Corporation. Production of the Avanti II models began in 1964 and continued until 1984. These cars are considered by many as the best quality Avanti's ever made. The Corvette engines & transmissions added performance but were easy to maintain. The car was factory equipped with air conditioning, electric window lifts, AM/FM stereo/cassette, tinted glass, power-assisted steering and brakes. The factory would paint cars in any available automotive color and upholstered and carpeted the interior in any home or automotive vinyl/fabric/rug material.
Avanti is Italian for "forward" or "advance. Avanti was the first American mass-produced car to feature standard disc brakes. The Avanti's emphasis on safety, with seatbelts available as an option, safety door latches and roll-over protection bar, was also very advanced.
Our 1980 Avanti II is a pre (Stephen H.) Blake era car. This was the last year the car was offered with the larger Corvette engine. This car has a 350 cu.in. 5.7 liter V-8 with a 3 speed automatic transmission. It shows [1]01,084 on the odometer. The car runs well. The vinyl upholstered interior is in good shape for a car of this age with no cracks on the dash.
What the car needs is (see photos):
- The air conditioning is not working
- The windshield is chipped ($75 repair cost)
- There is some rust on the wheels, mirrors and on the roof at the windshield
- There is extreme rust on the frame. We do not recommend driving the car until this is corrected and therefore will not issue temporary tags. The car must be transported.
Frame rust is not uncommon on Avanti IIs. The frame sections are called torque boxes or “hog troughs” and there are kits available for replacement at $1,375 per set in standard steel, Installation does not require specialized skills or tools. The replacement kits can be installed more easily than the original frame sections and with minimal welding. An article in Avanti Magazine titled “Hog Troughs … It’s not that hard by Bud Weisser, also an owner of a 1980, takes you through the process of replacing rusted frame channels or torque boxes.
