Vehicle Detail
Your looking at a pretty solid 1962 Oldsmobile Starfire. I bought it as a project car but I have too much going on to get to it so up for auction she goes. I will describe this car as I see it & my description is honest. I am pretty picky so some of the things I mention may seem like no big deal to you but I would want the seller to disclose everything to me, regardless of the size, seriousness, or magnitude of the issue. I want the buyer to be educated about the vehicle, not lied to or mislead. Thanks for looking & best of luck bidding! General description: First, let me say that this car is an extremely solid for almost 50 years old. It is straight as an arrow but does have some trouble spots as I mention below. It needs a full restoration to be a show quality car but only some moderate work to be a great daily driver. I love the look of this car, it takes after the '62 Impala from the cowl back and has a distinct rear and front end. If someone has the time to give this baby the TLC she deserves, it wil be a beautiful ride! Check out other 62 Starfires on google images...they can look very cool. I just don't have to the time. This car is being sold as is, where is, with no warranty or guarantee offered or implied. It's decibed to the best of my knowledge. If you have questions, PLEASE ASK BEFORE YOU PLACE THE WINNING BID!!!! 394 High Compression V8, 10.5 to 1 compression ratio, 4 BL Carb, 3 speed Auto trans., 3.23 differential ratio, dual exhaust. Car has power windows, power sterring, and power brakes, remote trunk control. Car was originally Sunset Mist Metallic (like a champaigne color with a pink tint...google Oldsmobile Sunset Mist & you can se for yourself). I chemically stripped a spot on the trunk & it revealed the original color, then red, then flat black as you see it in here. Looks as if it was repainted once in red & then someone shot this flat black on it. The grey primer you see in the pics is what I sprayed over the spot I stripped ( I didn't have flat black on hand). Mileage is an estimate only as I don't have all the history to prove otherwise. What works/or is in good shape: I installed a new 4 barrel Rochester carburator (new old stock replacement), a new fuel pump (also new old stock), a new fuel filter, a new negative ground wire off the battery, new plugs, new plug wires, new coil, new coil wire, new distributor cap & rotor. I have also replaced some of the vacuum lines that were connected to the carb & fuel pump. All power windows work by using the switches located in the center console. All go down fine, passanger door window and drivers rear quarter window slow down a bit coming up but they work. Tachometer, interior lights on the sides of the center console, speedometer all work. Courtesy lights in the back (opera lights) work but need bulbs. I tested them with the center console bulbs. Front & rear blinkers, brake lights, low & high beam headlights, parking lights, horn, license plate light all work. Brakes & transmission are smooth. Car shifts, rides, steers, and stops fine. Engine starts right up with a single pump of the gas pedal & sometimes that's not even needed. Idles fine, revs fine. All glass is good, original, no cracks. There is a little clouding starting in the lower ride corner of the windshield. Hood, trunk, & doors open & close fine. The passanger door shuts like a new car, drivers side needs a minor adjustment & would close just as good as the passanger side but still closes fine as is. Radiator doesn't leak, the cap holds pressure, and the water pump looks solid (no leaks). Alternator works but I haven't had it tested. Tires all have decent tread life left Bottom of the doors, the rocker panels, trunk floor, back of the rear quarters, front fenders, roof, hood, deck lid are all solid. The body is incredibly straight and solid with the exceptions I describe below. Front & rear bumpers are solid & have nice chrome although not show quality chrome. Good daily driver chrome. Body lines all look good. Frame appears to be straight. What doesn't work/is missing/or needs work: Interior will need work, seats need redone, door panels are there but need work, headliner is nonexistant but all the rails & brackets come with the car, carpet is there but I would replace. Dash lights need about six new bulbs installed before seeing if they work properly Power window switches on the backseat armrests do not work however as stated above, the switches that control all four windows from the center console do work Radio is missing. I have seen these on Ebay for a fair price. I think the dash pad is missing?? Someone before me installed a black dash cover type material on the dash top but it's not original. Heater & wipers are not working. These both have vacuum operated controls and I noticed the vacuum hoses to both of these controls are disconnected. The hoses are dry rotted and cracked so I didn't bother reconnecting them. New vacuum hose is needed before troubleshooting the heater/wipers...could just be the vacuum lines. Remote trunk not working but that's vacuum too...maybe another hose issue, I haven't checked into it, I just pop the trunk with the key. Reverse lights are not working but could be the bulbs or loose ground or the reverse light switch Engine smokes a little on start up from the right bank. It is minimal and goes away for the most part after a minute or so. Some very minor blue smoke comes out of the right side exhaust only & is so faint, you have to stare at it to catch the slight blue smoke. My guess is the motor could use a valve job as this type of smoking is usaully caused by worn valve seats. Battery could be replaced with a stronger one but starts the car fine. Battery tray is still solid enough to hold the battery but it does have some rust out on one corner. Passanger fender, lower rear bottom corner has a small dent. Passanger side rear quarter at the bottom of the fender well in front of the tire, has a rust hole. Same with the drivers side but not as advanced as the passanger side. Passanger floor pan has rust area that will need patched at some point. Drivers side floor is solid. Car looks to have been undercoated from the factory and most of it is still entact. Small rust hole on the deck lid outer rear lip, about the size of a pencil eraser. Some rust through near the inside trunk lock mechanism Exhaust is complete but would be worth replacing. Functions fine as is though. Windshield washer tank is there but empty. Without the wipers working, I cannot say whether or not the washer works. The hose to the wipers will need replaced, it's dry rotted. Suspension could use a new set of shocks and maybe some new rubber bushings but function ok as is. Passanger door missng one piece of center trim, drivers side missng upper trim piece and small trim piece aft of the door lock. Side mirror missing on drivers door. Underneath the car, the engine & transmission are wet but no drips and no spots in the driveway after being there for months. Not sure what's casuing it but all fluid levels are good. May be a weeping seal(s)??? I haven't looked at the brakes, wheel bearings, tie rods, driveshaft, etc, etc. They seem ok but again, may want to check them out to be sure. I would if I were holding onto it. Hubcaps will need additional clips to really secure them good. The clips attach to the rim & then to the caps. Extras Included: Two doors -one passanger door and one drivers door. Both doors are extremely solid. Both have a few minor dents that look to ne from handling/storage. Drivers door has vent window only and has all outside trim pieces. Passanger door is loaded with all glass, glass channels, window motor, interior door panel (it's blue though), vent window crank handle, inside door handle but no interior arm rest. Driver & Passanger rear quarter windows with mechanisms Pair of hood hinges Extra dash Extra passanger side dash insert Lots of center console parts Interior courtesy lights Dual headlight assembly Lots of extra headlight bezels Other misc stuff The old carburator (if you want it...can be rebuilt as a spare if you so desire) The original service manual along with other brochures.
