Vehicle Detail

The picture shown was taken after a restoration at Rainbow Auto Works in E.H.T. NJ by Susan Miller president of the local Porsche Club of America in 1994. This car is an unfinished professional restoration. $4300 in new parts and $2735.91 in labor has been spent and its ready for paint. It was originally silver and the interior is all black. There is a balance owed to the shop of $2000 on the original estimate of $4735.91. This does not include the interior and all of the parts were purchased independently. A.I.R. parts purchased for this restoration: GTS headlights $850, front hood $350, GTS rear wing $425, hood scoop $125, front fender $225, front faring $350, tirerack.com pirelli p-zero-nero tires $550, PARTS HEAVEN parts include: new complete carpet set $600, new windshield $350, used rear hatch glass $125, 4 nose vent louvers, new front shield, decals, blinkers, driving lights, used sunroof with new seals. This car is a mystery. It has an extremely rare cat, a euro head #931104 3013R, and with the LSD transaxle the power off the line was Phenomenal. I was clocked doing 86 mph in second gear and top speed was 160 mph 18 mph more than a standard US spec 1981 924 turbo . There was a group of 924 turbos built for US racing known as 931 (reference the excellence issue with the silver 968 cabriolet on the cover). They were the test bed for the lambda fuel system and the bosch motronic computerized timing control unit. This may be one of those cars. If I am correct it will also have a titanium drive pin. They did not receive the intercooler like the european 924 carrera GTS so they would pass threw US customs but like the GTS they were enhanced with stronger shafts and better pistons to handle the added 40 hp offered by the intercoolers that were installed after they arrived. They were also jacked up to meet bumper height requirements and a rear shock bumper was installed. The rear shock bumper was taken off of this car and replaced with the small european shell by Susan Miller. Porsche only internally referred to all 924 turbos as 931 and 932 (reference wikipedia). There was never an official designation for the entire line like the 911 and its 930 variant. The car was last driven in 2000. At that time it had no mechanical problems and had 1000 miles on a clutch, pressure plate,throw-out bearing and starter installed by Donny knoll at Point Auto Repair in Somerspoint NJ. He also did front end work on the passenger side. I pinned a curb to avoid crossing a road after smoking the last of the clutch. A Fuch was bent and replaced with a white one. The others were black and painted pearl white to match the car during the last restoration. A natural evolution for this car would be to have an intercooler installed which necessitates the removal of the air conditioning system. Susan Miller removed part of the system and moved the clock to the center of the dash and a voltage meter was put in its place. At 49000 miles when I first ran the car the timing belt was changed by Clive at Precision Cars of Atlantic City NJ. After my brother blew first mistaking it for third Clive pointed to a ten foot row of Porsche repair manuals and said your car is not mentioned anywhere in these books you are going to have a hard time finding used parts for this car. He replaced the LSD transaxle with a standard one from Parts Heaven and repaired the front left drivers side seat mount. He also replaced the cat and rehung the entire exhaust system with new o rings and stainless steel bolts. The standard 924 turbo cat was not a match. After a nationwide search one used match was found for $1200. The previous owner deleted it and installed a Y pipe. Instead of the wastegate pipe connecting with the exhaust pipe behind the cat it enters the cat two thirds of the way back. I included pictures of the cat. If you look closely at the first picture you can see the 931 stamp on the cat. The computerized timing control unit and relay where replaced by Ditmire in Absecon NJ. I replaced the master and slave cylinder for the hydraulic clutch myself and knebles in mayslanding NJ replaced the lower boot on the air flow fuel body. Fred also sealed the battery tray that was leaking rain water into the car with a sealant that was ordered from Germany. The motor was started midterm in 2005 by Bruno's in Vineland NJ. I was not there but he said it was fine. The timing belt is due to be changed and should be before it is started. The new rear wing is not on the car yet.The rear hatch glass was shattered and has been replaced with a used one. The cloth Recaro's are rotted so is the wooden upper half of the rear fold down seat even though the black leather has remained intact and the Alpine was removed by vandals. The fuch's are 7" and 8" The car is at Dans Auto body in Ocean view NJ On Apr-15-11 at 19:35:28 PDT, seller added the following information: The three supports in the bottom of the front faring should be cut out it looks better with metal strap hangers on the inside and if you spank the street with those supports in place you will loose your front end.
