Vehicle Detail

1963 Matchless G12 CSR 650cc 1963 G12 CSR 650cc twin cylinder motorcycle. This is the rare top of the line Matchless big twin high-performance model for the period. Matchless Touring twins were sold in Standard and De Luxe form, with high performance models coded CSR. This is a matching engine and frame numbers original CSR bike. The engine and frame numbers match the plate on the fork tube which reads: Matchless Motorcycles London, SE 18 Model G12 CSR Frame No. 85022 Eng. No. 9232. Frame Number stamped on frame is A85022. Engine Numbers Stamped into Engine Case:G12 CSR x9232. I purchased this bike from a private collector about 6 years ago where it had been on display. The gas tank and side covers look to have been repainted prior to my ownership and still look excellent to very good. The frame appears to be original paint but I'm not positive. I had the engine gone through by award wining british bike restoration expert, Mickey Peters of Bakersfield, CA. New +.02 Hipolyte Pistons, new bore, new valves, new rod bearings and shells, cleaned crank sludge traps. Front Forks disassembled cleaned and chrome replated. New correct alloy fenders and a tail light license plate bracket were purchased from the AJS/Matchless club in England. Electrical and charging system work excellent. Magneto freshly rebuilt. I have put approximately over 3,500 trouble free miles on the rebuilt engine. The engine has been gently broken in and retorqued and retuned and then ridden on many 100+ mile rides. It runs trouble free and I’m sure will continue to do so for the next owner. This is a dependable excellent running british big twin. This bike is an easy starter and starts on the first or second kick. Bike has Metzler ME33 Laser 3.25x19 on the front and Dunlop K81 19x4.0 on the rear with about 3,500 miles on them. This bike runs like a charm. Pulls nice and smooth through all gears and will cruise comfortably at 70+mph. Snap the throttle and you better have held on because this CSR is fast and will hold its own against Triumphs and Nortons of the period. Paint is overall in very good condition with some chips and scratches here and there. Chrome is in very good to excellent condition throughout. This bike wouldn’t take much time or money to be a show quality or restored condition bike if that’s the way you want to go. On the scale of 1 to 10, I would give this bike an 8.5 in terms of cosmetic condition. Perhaps a 9.5 out of 10 for mechanical condition. A very rare and desirable 1960’s big twin Matchless. This is a nice bike which is ready to be ridden and enjoyed, shown or stored and admired. I am selling this and a few other bikes due to loss of storage space. The only known issues are largely cosmetic and are as follows: Previous owner put incorrect earlier year larger knee pads on the tank. Unfortunately the knee pads were glued over a portion of the red paint near the bottom of the tank. The knee pads should have been glued on in only the chrome area of the gas tank. One of the knee pads fell off on a ride and I decided to put the correct one on. While removing the old glue some of the red paint on the lower part of the right tank chipped off the chrome. The left side was not chipped as bad but some of the pinstripe came off, I did a quick touch up with One Shot pinstripe paint, but I am far from being an experienced pinstriper. I think the bottom of the tank could be touched up by a professional with great results or you can put the earlier type bigger knee pads back on over this area. Also the odometer seems to be miscalibrated on the low side by about 50% - meaning that the milage on the odometer increases approximately 1 mile for every 2 miles traveled. The speedometer calibration does not have this issue and appears accurate. Probably was rebuilt with the wrong gear ratio for the odometer, possibly for Kilometers. When I bought the bike 6 years ago, the speedo had zero miles on it and a cable was not connected, so the speedo unit is either N.O.S. or rebuilt at some point as the speedo looks perfect. The current odometer reading is about 1,750 miles which indicates I have put about twice that milage on the bike or 3,500 miles since purchasing and having the engine rebuilt. Also, prior to my ownership it looks like an extra light switch was mounted in the headlamp shell to plug the hole of where an amp meter should sit. There are a couple of touched up scratches on the headlamp shell as well. The Matchless is available for local viewing. The bike has clear CA DMV title. Please ask if you have any questions prior to bidding, I will be happy to answer any questions about this motorcycle.
