Vehicle Detail
I am proud to put up for sale my 1980 500 SLC that I have wonderfully and carefully restored, both mechanically and cosmetically. This is a rare completely stock limited production euro 1980 500SLC 5.0 - 1 of only 1,299 produced. Still considered the rarest post WWII sports car built by Mercedes Benz. These german muscle cars were only released in Europe and with one purpose; to get homologated for rally racing in the WRC. This automobile is an absolute pleasure to drive! Total SLC production 62,888Total 500SLC production 1,299Original List price DM 67,122 I bought the car for $3800 in July 2006 in Colorado Springs--no humidity and very little rust. I had the exterior completely stripepd down, minor dents fixed, multiple sanded, painted, and multiple clear coats to the tune of about $4000. I had a very reputable California upholstery customizing company create, for $2650, a complete cream leather interior and new carpets throughout. This includes 2 complete front seats and backs, 2 headrest covers, the center armrest, the back seat and seatback, the back armrest, both door panel skins, both rear panel skins, a complete carpet kit and a trunk carpet kit. Then, I had a professional installer install it all for $2000. It is stunningly beautiful--far nicer than the original vinyl. I had a car audio place install an Alpine CDA-9857 CD Player and Radio with a KCE-4221 Ipod cable (in glove box). It has the XM tuner pack as well. It has new Alpine speakers in fron and on the rear deck. Very sharp--and cost a total of about $800 with new wiring throughout. It has 4 custom Hockenheim rims with almost new tires (6000 miles). The tires are 225/50/VR16 and absolutely look sharp. Mechanically, the car had considerable underbody work completed before I bought it. However, right away I had the following replaced: timing chain, tensioner, timing guide rails, valve cover gasket and seals, and spark plugs. Replaced headlight doors, tail light assemblies and almost everything associated with power steering. Since the AC wasn't working like I wanted, I completely replaced it. New climate control unit, stock AC compressor, AC condenser, dryer, temperature switch and then had the whole thing re-charged. All to the tune of about $2000. Recently, I replaced the ignition switch, the idle control, and a few other things. The vacuum door locks work. All electrical parts work, such as sliding sunroof, power windows, etc. OK, so here are the few warts. During a recent move, some scratched a 1" x 4" piece on the passenger front door. There are a few minor dings by the gas tank and on the door edges. I showed each of these in the pictures. The front part of the center console needs to be tightened up--meaning either you or someone needs to create a secure frame for the stereo to sit in and for the wood and console to secure to. It all works fine, but it could be secured better in this area. The little louvers in the side rear quarter windows is flaking. You could replace if you want to--I never felt the need to. The rubber/foam seal that is supposed to keep water out of the trunk doesn't...this is probably rhe first think you want to fix as it is causing the botom of the trunk (under where the spare tire goes) to rust. Oh, there is no spare. So, that's it. As you can see, it is a very special car that needs someone's TLC. I've had fun building a driving it, but I need to downsize my number of cars. The car starts first time, every time. It is a tank--made of steel and with a 21 or so gallon fuel tank. From a standstill, it will push you into your seat on acceleration. You will barely know when you hit 65. You can do the math to see how much time, money and effort I've put into it so bid accordingly.
