This is a 1999 Mazda Miata with many upgrades, both factory and aftermarket. The Miata is a modern classic, a sporty convertible suitable for both gentle summer-evening cruises and aggressive racing. This example is biased in the sporting direction, though it handles trips to the drive-in just fine. The car is completely functional, runs well and needs nothing, and what age it shows is typical for this vintage. This Miata has been well-maintained and upgraded. The rear window defroster works well, and the bolts needed for installing a hard top are present, though no hard top is included in this auction. The ride is firm, but the chassis modifications make cornering incredible. As a daily driver, fuel mileage varies from mid 30s on the freeway to high 20s in town. All climate controls work just fine, and the small size means it heats up quickly when it’s cool outside. This car has a handful of minor flaws. The power antenna does not fully retract. It didn’t when we bought it, and despite the fact that it’s a cheap and simple fix, we simply haven’t yet. The driver’s side window is slow to roll down, though it’s completely functional. This model of Miata is known to have an “idle dip” in which engine speed will drop a few hundred RPM occasionally while sitting still. The clean EGR and new electronics help, but do not eliminate it. Some would call the shifting “notchy,” while others may think it merely precise and appropriate. We were rear-ended in 2009, resulting in an insurance claim and replacement of the trunk bed, rear bumper frame and differential, which is thus much newer than the rest of the transmission. What rust there is is generally confined to the underbody and suspension, where it is ugly but not otherwise a problem. But in all, this car is ready for spirited back road touring, runs to your favorite diner, or a session of autocross. Given this model’s reliability, there’s no reason it won’t have another decade of fun driving in front of it. There are 1991 Miatas still on the road, still making their owners happy. Speaking of happy owners, we are some. This has easily been the most enjoyable car we’ve ever owned, and we’re quite disappointed to see it go. But for all the things Miatas do, they don’t handle a growing family well, and we don’t have the garage space to keep it for rare nights out. So off it goes.
