Vehicle Detail
Hi all, I'm listing a very clean, though certainly not showroom condition, vintage beetle that I have owned for about 4 years now. I bought it here on Ebay, in fact. It has been a terrific little car for me, runs great. I have had repaired or replaced virtually all of the car's major systems (except the electrical) since i have owned it. Some details of that are below. I'm selling because I have an 18 mo. old and since she was born I have driven the car maybe a dozen times.... just not kid safe and we have 2 other cars that are. I'd like this to go to a home where it will be enjoyed and driven. I also don't want to pay the extra $60 a month in insurance when I don't drive it! It has been parked outside but always under a high quality rain/sun cover. I never drive it in the rain or oppressive heat - it has only bee na weekend, good weather car for me. There is some trivial rust but nothing structural and nothing involving the floor pan. My mechanic recently commented that it's "one of the cleanest bugs he's seen in a long time" in terms of structural rust. It needs a new paint job if you want to look up close but for daily driving and turning heads tooling around New Orleans, people think it looks great. People love to see it drive by. Major work done on the car in the last 4 years: (I have records that go with the car) 1. New engine (rebuilt) - new cylinders, pistons, rings, valves - about 5000 miles / 3 years ago. It's a 1600cc motor. The car easily does 70mph on the highway with no trouble at all. It does not leak oil.2. New brakes- master cylinder, wheel cylinders, drums and shoes - 3 yrs ago.3. New single-tailpipe exhaust system 2-3 yrs ago.4. New generator and voltage regulator just after I bought the car.5. New starter motor and a new accelerator cable (the original snapped) about 6 months ago. I also replaced the fuel tank float and a couple of other minor things. I have changed the oil faithfully since I have owned the car. The tires are fine but not new. The lights all work including high beams and turn signals. Obviously, the 92,000 odd miles on the odometer may not reflect the actual mileage on this 44 year old car. I suspect the odometer may have rolled a couple of times. I can tell you that I personally have put about 7,000 miles on the car since I have owned it. It was just tuned and inspected by a mechanic 6 months ago and has been driven 3 or 4 times since. Once she warms up for a couple of minutes, she runs perfectly. The only "issues" i see with the car are mainly cosmetic - the body isn't perfect, with some paint chips and some superficial rust, mainly on the bumpers and where the bumpers join the car. The gas gauge works but only from 1/2 tank and down to empty. It never reads more than 1/2 tank full but is accurate below there. The front bumper has been pushed in a bit too far and so the front luggage compartment doesn't open freely, without grazing the bumper. This would probably be an easy fix but I haven't had the time or inclination to do it, since it doesn't really come into play except when I fill up. The seats are not original to the car - they have been covered with red vinyl seat covers - and they do not move forward or back. I'm 5'9" tall and it fits me just fine. Someone shorter than 5'7" or taller than 5'11" would probably want to do something about getting the seats adjusted. I added new belts with shoulder straps. The radio is original to the car but does not work. The steering wheel was replaced before I bought the car and the horn is operated from a button beneath the dashboard. The horn is original, just the button is not on the steering wheel. Out of an abundance of caution, I guess, the previous owner also installed an audible buzzer that sounds when the little amber "check engine" light comes on. All the glass is original from Germany and intact, including the pop out windows in the back, which work fine. EXTRAS: With the car, the buyer will receive repair manuals, a copy of "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive" by John Muir and a repair DVD that walks you through the basic maintenance tasks you'll need to know. I'll also include whatever parts I have (not much), a few oil change kits, some VW-specific tools, and a new reproduction stock steering wheel (still in the box that I never had a chance to put on). There's probably a few other things than I've forgotten about in the shed, but basically anything I have that is specific to the bug goes with it. That's plenty for now. I'm putting a reserve of $3000 on the car. I think that's a steal, frankly, but I really would like to sell it without a lot of fuss over a few hundred dollars. If no one cares to bid $3k , I'll just keep driving it every few months and enjoy. I'll be happy to answer questions and would be happy to have you come test drive it and/or have a mechanic look it over for you. Thanks, Jim
