My project for the last 16 months is officially for sale! I found this 71 (brick) in a yard about 20 miles from my house and decided it would be a good project. It turns out there was much more work than I anticipated.......She is origanally from Oregon, and now resides in Central Texas, by way of a trailer. The young lady that sold it to me, said that her parents used to (drag her around) to those Gratefull Dead concerts in this van when she was a kid! I knew this was the right bus for recycle. The 1971 is one of the MOST SOUGHT AFTER models, because it was the last year of the (upright) beetle engine and the first year of front disc brakes. This is what I have done. Located and overhauled a duel port 1600CC. New bearings, Cylinders, Pushrods and Pistons. Remove old carb and install a new Weber 40 progressive carb. New Oil cooler, Fan and shroud, all the correct cooling tin and new engine seals. Installed new Brake pads, Brake hoses, Slave cylinders, turned rotors and had the Master cylinder rebuilt by a local shop. Powder coated rims. The front Floor pans were rusted out and so was the Battery Tray. These were expensive and very labor intensive.....but I replaced them with NEW pans. Repaired in a professional manner of course. All rust which was around the windshield was cut out, ground out and repaired with POR15 products, same was done for the surface rust in the floor section of the rear. Anything that was too bad was cut out and replaced. Por15 is good stuff and was used liberally on this bus. New Windshield, New front door seals, New sliding door seal. Rear windows and front door seal for the window does need to be replaced. New Anteana, (no stereo) New Rear view side mirrors, New Door handles and roller and nylon block for the rear slider. New paint job, Original paint code colors! not a good one...20 footer for sure, but she looks good and can be show quality with little effort! You may notice that the interior door panels are missing in the photos, I have new ones on order, should be here by the end of the auction! This bus is not perfect, but is sound and of much better than average quality. You can just drive her, or keep working on her till she truly is perfect. You decide. I tried to take as many pictures as you will need, please don't wear me out asking for more and more, especially, if you haven't even bid! Ebay is a funny place, lot's of tire kickers.
