Vehicle Detail
For sale is a real 1972 Mercury Comet GT I inherited from my grandmother when she passed away in 1998. She bought this new from Rooney Ford in Benson, MN. I have the original window sticker, build sheet, owner's manual, clear title, and most receipts for maintenance and repairs from 1972 to date. This car is numbers matching, meaning the original 302 V-8 engine and C4 automatic transmission in the car are VIN correct. Currently, the car has 167,333 miles on it. My grandmother had the original scoop left off the car in 1972 after hitting a deer, so I installed one a few years ago. It is the correct Ford scoop for this year car, but the hood scoop paint and hood stickers are not properly applied. The engine and transmission have been rebuilt, along with the front suspension, including upper and lower control arms, bushings, springs, and front and rear shocks. The engine was run on a dyno and made 265 hp and 314 lb/ft of torque. It has an Edelbrock 4 Bbl carburetor and aluminum intake, MSD ignition, 9.0:1 compression, mildly ported heads with hardened seats, and a mild cam. The transmission has a street stall converter. About 4,000 miles have been put on the car since rebuilding. The car has headers, a 2 1/2" aluminized mandrel bent system with h-pipe, and stainless steel tips, all custom built. Not an exhaust system like it in the world. Other various parts are new as well. Any parts removed from the car have been saved, e.g. exhaust manifolds, original intake and carb, air cleaner, etc. The paint above the Comet GT stripe is original. Below the Comet GT stripe, the car was repainted in the early 1990s. Both front floorboards have holes in them by where your feet go. The passenger side has more damage than the driver side. The rear floor pans are solid. The extension on the front floorboard from the frame rail to the rocker (like a torque box) on the passenger side is mostly eaten away. The proper repair would be to replace both front floor pans and the extension. The rockers are solid. Also, the rear lower quarter panels have repairs in them. The paint is bubbling on the outside of about the lower 10 inches of the driver side, and on the inside of the trunk you can see the extensions have rust. I am not sure how the metalwork was performed, but some sort of patch panels were installed over the existing lower quarter panels. The trunk floor is in really good shape. The bottoms of the doors show some surface rust along the edges, but the doors are solid. The fenders are both solid and only need surface rust removal. The gas tank has a rusty seam in the front that leaks when the tank is over half full. One wheel lip molding is missing from the left rear. Front bucket seats have tears in the lower seat vinyl along the seams. It has always been stored indoors, and my price reflects the condition of the car. This is a real Mercury Comet GT with documentation.
